Ryan’s Curtis Petersen and Zach Voight were honored for stellar 2008 seasons with second-team selections to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Class 4A all-state team last week.

The honors come on the heels of numerous others for Petersen and Voight. Petersen was named the District 5-4A MVP after posting a 12-2 record in 2008. He had a 1.03 ERA to go along with 127 strikeouts. He was also named the Denton Record-Chronicle’s all-area MVP.

Petersen originally signed a national letter of intent to play at the University of Nebraska, but the Florida Marlins took him in the fourth round of the MLB draft. He has not yet signed a contract with the Marlins.

Voight led the Dallas-Fort Worth area in RBIs for much of the season. He finished with 46 to go along with a .449 batting average and 34 runs. He was the Denton Record-Chronicle and district Offensive Player of the Year. He will attend Odessa Junior College this fall.

The pair helped Ryan win back-to-back district championships in 2007 and 2008, seasons where the Raiders reached the regional quarterfinals.

Sanger’s Cole Stephens was a first-team selection in Class 3A. Stephens guided the Indians to their best season in school history. The team won its first district title in 30 years and reached the postseason.

He was District 8-3A’s Pitcher of the Year in 2008, posting a 10-1 record, a 1.87 ERA and 132 strikeouts.

Aubrey’s Grant Henry and Krum’s Derek Howell made the second team in Class 2A. Henry made it as a pitcher and Howell as a shortstop.

Henry was the District 13-2A Offensive Player of the Year, batting .500 with 23 RBIs, 25 runs and 20 stolen bases. As a pitcher, he posted a 7-2 record with a 1.45 ERA and 72 strikeouts.

Howell was the 13-2A MVP, batting .424 with 18 RBIs and 33 runs. He had a 7-4 record as a pitcher with a 2.23 ERA with 104 strikeouts.
