Football: James, Sherman run all over Wildcats, 42-7

09:07 AM CDT on Saturday, November 3, 2007

By Brad McDonnell / For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Sherman running back Waymon James scored on runs of 52, 55 and 69 yards Friday in a 42-7 win over Guyer at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex.

James finished with 244 yards on 11 carries to go along with his three touchdowns in the District 5-4A game.

"Sherman showed tonight that they're a good football team," Guyer head coach John Walsh said. "I told our guys that if you want to have success, then you better jump on [James]. When James gets hot, then you're in trouble, and we let him get hot."

Guyer's offense misfired on several opportunities inside the Sherman 10-yard line. Quarterback Jake Witt set up the Wildcats (1-8, 1-4) with first-and-goal from the 5-yard line early in the first quarter after picking up 11 yards on third down. But the ball popped away from Witt on the next play and Sherman recovered it after the ball rolled back to the 31-yard line.

On another first-and-goal play from the 5, Witt threw an interception in the back of the end zone.

"Our turnovers killed us," Walsh said. "You can't have that many turnovers and expect to win the ball game."

Sherman (3-5, 1-3) quickly jumped out to a 19-0 lead midway through the first quarter and led 25-0 at halftime. The offensive line opened up several wide holes for James, who scored on the third play from scrimmage, taking a pitch through the right side of the line for 55 yards.

Guyer responded in the second half after Ravion Ingram returned the kickoff to the Sherman 32-yard line. The Wildcats scored in five plays when Witt ran in from 3 yards out. Witt had a productive game on the ground, running for 123 yards on 19 carries and a score. The senior became the first player in school history to surpass 1,000 yards rushing.

The Guyer defense, however, could not hold off Sherman. The Bearcats needed only six plays in the second half to score when Matt Rome connected with Greg Millerick for a 17-yard touchdown. Rome finished the game completing eight of 13 passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns.
