Girls basketball: Krum slips past Aubrey to clinch 10-2A crown
07:19 AM CST on Wednesday, February 3, 2010
AUBREY — Until Tuesday night, Krum’s pursuit of the District 10-2A championship had been fairly devoid of intrigue.
Yet, with a chance to finally clinch the top spot in the standings, the Lady Cats were just one missed free throw away from making things a lot more interesting.
Despite struggling offensively with their lowest point total of the season, Krum held on against a tenacious Aubrey squad to earn a 34-33 road win and clinch this season’s outright district title.
Krum (30-1, 12-0), ranked seventh in Class 2A according to the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, now holds an insurmountable two-game lead in the standings after sweeping both Ponder and Aubrey this season.
The Lady Chaparrals (23-6, 9-3), meanwhile, lost their last chance to challenge for the district title. A win over the Lady Cats would have kept them mathematically alive for the championship with just two games remaining on the schedule.
That isn’t to say that Aubrey didn’t make things interesting.
Krum asserted itself early on, going on a 7-0 run in response to an early Aubrey basket, and looked to be pulling away before a Kaitlin Brown basket pulled the Lady Chaps within three. Aubrey carried that momentum into the second quarter, pressuring the Lady Cats on defense and going on a 5-0 run midway through the quarter to take a 13-12 lead at the half.
Krum shot just 1-of-8 from the field in the second quarter and, at one point, turned the ball over three possessions in a row leading directly to four Aubrey points.
“We had a poor first half,” Krum head coach Lana Degelia said. “Twelve points in the first half is very unusual for us. We just couldn’t get the ball to fall and we didn’t execute offensively.”
The Lady Cats managed to recover in the third, edging out to a 21-20 lead going into the third thanks to five Kirsti Degelia points in 22 seconds to end the quarter. Degelia continued her tear into the fourth, scoring another five points in under a minute midway through the quarter to give Krum a 30-25 lead with five minutes to go.
Not to be outdone, Aubrey responded with an 8-0 run and took a three-point lead after Presley Stastny converted on a three-point play with just 1:33 remaining.
Krum had a chance to answer after Degelia was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, but continued its struggles from the line. The Lady Cats shot just 5-of-19 from the free-throw line in the game and went 1-of-5 in the final minute.
“We had a horrible night from the line,” Lana Degelia said. “We missed a lot of points from free throws. Speaking realistically, when you miss that many free throws, normally you don’t win games like this.”
Ultimately, though, it was Aubrey who couldn’t hit from the stripe when it counted.
After Krum’s Erin Dickson put her team up by one with a 3-pointer with 29 seconds remaining, the Lady Chaps had one last chance after Stastny was fouled under the basket with just 0.7 seconds remaining in the game. She missed the front end of the one-and-one, however, sealing the win for Krum and ending Aubrey’s upset bid.
“It was a great effort by the kids tonight,” Aubrey head coach Johnny Hodge said. “They played good enough to win tonight. Unfortunately, Krum made more plays at the end and they deserved to win it.”
Degelia led all scorers, accounting for 20 of her team’s 34 points to go along with five rebounds. Aubrey was led by Stastny’s 11 points while Sidney Karr and Jac Bullock each had nine.
