Football: Pilot Point, Aubrey ready for showdown
11:32 PM CST on Thursday, November 5, 2009
AUBREY -- Aubrey head coach G.A. Moore wanted to make sure of one thing this week.
He didn’t want to be the center of attention leading up to Aubrey’s District 10-2A title game against rival Pilot Point.
“I really don’t deserve to be involved in all the hype in this game,” said Moore, Texas’ all-time winningest high school coach. “The game is solely about these young men from Pilot Point and Aubrey. The buildup should be solely on them. What these two teams have done is quite the feat.”
Moore, 70, has a point.
Pilot Point (9-0, 4-0) and Aubrey (9-0, 4-0) both head into tonight’s 7:30 p.m. matchup at Massey Stadium undefeated for the first time in the rivalry’s history.
Both teams have had few hiccups along the way. In every game this season, the Bearcats and the Chaparrals have won by more than 10 points.
“This is good for the towns,” Moore said. “This won’t happen a whole lot of times. I think it has a lot of people talking. I haven’t been going to the coffee shops but I hear this is all they are talking about. And that is good.”
But even though he may not like it, people are still talking about Moore. And those people have a point, also.
Moore is a storyline magnet for this game. The first-year Aubrey coach graduated from Pilot Point in 1957 after playing four years as the Bearcats’ quarterback. He also has coached Pilot Point on three separate occasions -- from 1963-1970, 1977-1985 and 2002-2004.
“I have a lot of feelings for Pilot Point,” said Moore, who has won six state titles. “I have coached there and Celina and now at Aubrey all these years. I will still have a lot of friends if we win or lose this game.”
Pilot Point fan Scotty Sharp said Moore’s return to his old coaching and playing quarters is the talk of the town.
“I have watched a lot of Pilot Point football since I was a kid,” said Sharp, 51. “And we all remember G.A. And we all have been waiting for his return since he took the job down at Aubrey. This is huge. I don’t think people that don’t live here understand how huge it is.”
The officials at Pilot Point do.
They have added 1,500 extra bleachers for tonight’s game in anticipation of a rowdy and rocky atmosphere in the small town of Pilot Point.
“Games like these are why small-town 2A football is what Texas football is all about,” Aubrey fan J.T Morris said. “You won’t find an atmosphere like this in Dallas or Denton.”
Pilot Point head coach Blake Feldt said both towns have been talking about this game since August. And now that both teams are undefeated and vying for the district title, it makes things even more interesting.
“Bottom line is these are two pretty good teams,” Feldt said. “There has been a lot of anticipation about this game since the beginning of the season. It has been growing every week. Now that it is here everybody can’t wait until kickoff. It is all everybody is talking about.”
So, who is going to win?
Both coaches laughed when asked the question and gave no answer. But both expect the game to be a good one. Aubrey’s defense has allowed just 28 points this year while pitching five shutouts.
“They do fantastic job defensively,” Feldt said. “They have really shut down every one they have played. We have to do a great job of just executing our offense. We have to be our very best to move the ball because they are very, very good.”
The Chaps have their toughest test ahead of them against Pilot Point’s high-octane offense. The Bearcats have scored more than 30 points in every game this season while outscoring its opponents, 391-88.
“Pilot Point is very, very talented and I think that they are playing with a lot of confidence,” Moore said. “They have some great athletes. They are old hat to the playoffs and big games.”
But win or lose, Moore likes to look at the bigger picture -- the postseason picture.
“This game really has no bearing on it but pride,” he said.
The reason being is because Pilot Point has already clinched the Division I seed out of 10-2A while Aubrey has already clinched the Division II top seed.
“I think this game is big for the fans,” Moore said. “As far as the players and coaches, I think it is not near as big because everything is already settled for the playoffs.”
But wouldn’t Moore like to experience another win at Massey?
“That would be nice,” he said. “Winning is always nice.”
Feldt knows the nice feeling of winning also, even against Moore.
Feldt’s victory over Moore came during the bi-district round of the 2004 playoffs, when Feldt’s Breckenridge team beat Moore’s Pilot Point team which at the time looked like Moore’s final game as a head coach.
“I was fortunate to win that game,” Feldt said of his team’s 34-32 win. “And now G.A is back.”
And everyone is talking about it.
