Football: Argyle pounds Bridgeport to stay unbeaten
01:02 AM CDT on Saturday, September 26, 2009
ARGYLE — Argyle backup quarterback Austin Aune was the Eagles’ equivalent of former Detroit Pistons guard Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson — instant offense.
Aune threw four first-half touchdown passes to put Bridgeport in a deep hole, as the Eagles (5-0) completed an undefeated nondistrict slate with a 44-14 victory over the Bulls on Friday night.
Argyle is off next week before starting district action against defending Class 3A Division I state champion Prosper.
The Eagles accomplished Friday’s win without leading running back Scott Seiber, who watched the game in street clothes while standing on a pair of crutches and with a brace on his right knee.
Seiber injured the knee during practice this week, and head coach Todd Rodgers said it is unclear how long he will be out.
The Eagles have rotated their quarterbacks to some degree this season, but for the second straight week Rodgers rotated his quarterbacks heavily — and his offense rolled. Aune finished 8-of-14 for 194 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. Chad Hedlund, the starter, went 5-of-12 for 52 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He threw his only touchdown pass in the third quarter — a 10-yarder to Layton Lowry.
“They both do different things well,” Rodgers said. “Chad is a great runner and can take advantage of that ability through play-action passing. Austin throws the ball well. For the first time we saw different defensive fronts for each quarterback, so we’ll have to tweak it. But they’re both playing well, and we’re really happy with the rotation.”
Aune provided the offense with a big spark on the Eagles’ third possession.
Aune split a pair of defenders to connect with Justin Bruton, who did the rest to score on a 61-yard reception with 4:31 left in the first quarter. On the ensuing drive, Bridgeport quarterback Cody Henson fumbled at the Argyle 39, with Eagles linebacker Blake Dunham recovering.
Two plays later, Aune threaded the needle to Bruton again, who turned it into a 64-yard touchdown with less than a minute left in the first.
Bruton finished with four receptions for 151 yards and two scores. He had six receptions for 78 yards entering the game.
Aune’s second-quarter touchdown passes were for 16 yards to Kevin Ryon and 14 yards to Lance Sutton. Sutton caught another touchdown pass from Aune in the third quarter — a 14-yard connection.
Despite a solid game statistically by Bulls quarterback Cody Henson, Bridgeport was largely ineffective against the Eagles defense, thanks in part to four turnovers that the Eagles turned into 21 points.
Jake Meeks picked off a pass and tackled Bridgeport running back Trent Schuett for a safety in the fourth quarter. Dunham recovered Henson’s first fumble of the game, which the Eagles turned into a score. Dran Crenshaw and Jake Sizelove recovered the other fumbles for Argyle.
Henson, who averaged 312 yards of total offense entering the game, had 49 rushing yards and 242 passing yards, going 23-for-41 with an interception. He fumbled twice but threw two touchdown passes to keep Bridgeport from getting shut out.
