Football: Bearcats crush Aubrey, win 10-2A title
01:50 AM CST on Saturday, November 7, 2009
PILOT POINT -- G.A. Moore and Aubrey finally met their match and at the same time got a nice dose of reality.
Aubrey, meet Pilot Point.
The Bearcats won the District 10-2A title on Friday night by ruining Moore’s return to Massey Stadium as they crushed the Chaparrals, 35-14 in a battle of undefeated teams in front of a sold-out crowd.
“Well, it wasn’t the return I would have liked,” said Moore, who graduated from Pilot Point in 1957 and coached the Bearcats from 1963-1970, 1977-1985 and 2002-2004. “But you know, I just love coaching in this area and I am happy for Pilot Point tonight. They have a great ball team and they will make a run in the playoffs. But this game showed we can be beat.”
Pilot Point (10-0, 5-0) came into the game as the favorite and proved it. The Bearcats scored on all four of their first-half possessions to build a 28-0 halftime lead. It was a strange sight for Aubrey (9-1, 4-1) players, who had allowed just 28 points during the first nine games of the season.
“I really felt like we could run against them,” said Pilot Point head coach Blake Feldt. “I really did.”
Pilot Point running back Jarman Johnson was a human highlight most of the night. He finished with three touchdowns and a season-high 247 yards rushing against one of the best defenses in Class 2A.
“Coming into this game I knew I could do what I did,” said Johnson, who has rushed for 1,414 yards this year. “All I did was just read my cuts and find the holes. I just see the field.”
He opened the scoring five plays into the game by cutting through Aubrey’s defense for a 61-yard touchdown.
After a Pilot Point interception by Justin Chambers, Johnson and the Bearcats went back to work. This time they opted for a ball-control approach to find the end zone.
Johnson capped a 13-play, seven-minute drive with a 13-yard score. During the drive, the senior star rushed for 54 yards on eight carries. By halftime he had 151 yards rushing on 17 carries.
“He is as good as a back as I have ever seen,” Moore said. “He makes play after play.”
Pilot Point went back to its quick-strike mentality on the next drive when it scored on its second play from scrimmage. This time, quarterback Seth Tilley did his best impersonation of Johnson by dodging his way past Aubrey defenders for a 40-yard rushing score.
Tilley then hurt Aubrey with his arm by throwing a 17-yard touchdown pass to Mason Guthrie in the final seconds of the first half to punctuate another long, 13-play drive.
It didn’t help Aubrey that its best running back and defensive back, Justin Griffin, was on the sideline the whole game with an ankle injury.
The Chaps struggled without him, especially at his safety position.
“We needed him,” Moore said. “He is our starting safety and he usually can stop runners from getting the big runs. We hope he is back next week.”
Aubrey spent most of its time moving backward. Quarterback James Wurster was sacked three times and the Chaps had just 35 yards of total offense at halftime and 184 for the game. Wurster also threw four interceptions.
“Our defense has been outstanding all year,” Feldt said. “Our staff has done a great job each game of game planning.”
Aubrey finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when Billy Feathers rushed in from 1 yard out. Feathers finished with a season-high 131 yards rushing.
Pilot Point answered in the fourth quarter when Johnson scored his third touchdown of the night and 25th rushing score of the season to make it 35-7.
“Johnson has been like that for us all season,” Feldt said. “Really, what can you really say about him? He is just a great back.”
The good news for Aubrey is it still is in the playoffs.
“We can make a run,” Moore said. “I saw some things tonight that made me believe we can do some good things in the playoffs.”
