01:46 AM CDT on Saturday, October 31, 2009

Staff reports

Lake Dallas teammates Taylor Lively and Austin Miller took the top two spots at the District 5-4A cross country meet on Friday at North Lakes Park.

Guyer won its second straight boys team title by placing six runners in the top 20 overall. Little Elm was second and Denton was third. All three teams will advance to the Class 4A Region I meet next weekend in Lubbock.

Lively completed the 5-kilometer course in 16:25, with Miller almost seven seconds behind. Guyer’s Wade Denton placed third in 16:41.

Also finishing in the top 10 for Guyer were Dalton Richey in fifth and Cameron Jackson in eighth place, providing the depth that gave the Wildcats the team title.

“They all ran good,” said Guyer head coach Carl Melson. “The course was sloppy, but the weather was perfect.”

Matt Renner led the Broncos with a seventh-place finish, followed by Chris Burke in 13th. Ryan’s Tristan Mayfield also is headed to regionals after finishing sixth overall.

On the girls side, Guyer was denied its fourth consecutive team title by The Colony, which placed five runners in the top 12 after navigating the 3,200-meter course.

The Lady Wildcats finished second and will advance to the regional meet. Guyer was led by Samantha Leyba (fourth place) and Daisy Vidal (sixth).

Denton’s Ashley Husbands was third overall and earned a spot at regionals. She finished in 13:35, which was 16 seconds behind overall winner Aubrey Ellett of Wichita Falls Rider.
