Boys basketball: Wildcats sweep rival Denton
Lineup change pays dividends for Guyer
08:54 AM CST on Wednesday, January 23, 2008
The feelings from the head coaches of Denton and Guyer on Tuesday night couldn’t have been much different.
Guyer (10-16, 2-5) completed a season sweep of its crosstown rival with a 63-54 win at Wildcat Gymnasium after having never beaten the Broncos prior to this season.
Wildcat head coach Nathan Moses shuffled his starting lineup and it paid huge dividends in the form of 13 points from Ryan Woodward and 12 from Melvin Fudge — both usual bench players.
“Our group effort was just great,” Moses said after his team held Denton’s star Fred Hunter to 10 points and one field goal. “Everyone who played [Tuesday] contributed. Everyone except one person scored.”
That one person was senior guard Aaron Joseph, who made his presence more than just felt in other areas of the game.
Joseph, who Moses called the team’s hardest worker, had the unenviable task of guarding Hunter along with teammates Quinton Gary and Fudge. Gary also led the team in scoring with 16.
Moses said he put forth a challenge to Joseph and his teammates in the pregame talk.
“I told Aaron to not let Fred outwork him,” Moses said. “I challenged the other four guys [Wildcats] on the floor to outwork Aaron.”
Denton head coach Harold Jackson wasn’t much for words after the loss.
“They just outplayed us — that’s it,” Jackson said. “They played harder than we did. We didn’t come in and play with any effort and they did, and if we keep doing that this will continuously happen.”
Hunter had one field goal in the second quarter but the rest of his eight points came at the foul line. Denton (8-15, 1-6) was led by Gary Robinson’s 16 points and Spencer Stewart’s 12.
“Everyone knows Fred is a great player, but they [Denton] have other threats too,” Moses said. “Desmond Taylor (five points) is a good player, Rodney Brown — their freshman — had seven and I’m sure Spencer Stewart (12 points) was fired up for the game being a senior. We had a great game against their team.”
The game had an ugly start as Denton led Guyer 8-7 after the first quarter, which admittedly, had Moses a little concerned.
“I look up and it’s 8-7 after the first quarter and I’m wondering if anyone’s ever going to come watch us play again,” he said. “Then we really turned it on in the third quarter.”
Guyer took a 21-18 lead into the half before the going on an 11-4 run to start the second half. The Broncos closed the gap at times in the third quarter, but Guyer led by 10 going into the fourth.
Denton attempted to get back in the game late by fouling, but Guyer made good on most of the opportunities and was able to keep the Broncos at arm’s length.
Moses said the most impressive thing to him about the win was the scoring that came from some unlikely sources.
“Ideally, I want our team to play unselfishly and take good shots,” Moses said. “When we’re pushing the ball up the floor and getting it to the open guy that’s when we’ll be good. We did that [Tuesday] and it worked out well for us.”
