Football: Broncos slip past Turner

02:03 AM CDT on Saturday, September 4, 2010

By Greg Bogomol / For the Denton Record-Chronicle

CARROLLTON — Cool, calm and collected are the only ways you could describe Denton kicker Michael Husbands on Friday night.

Husbands, just a freshman, kicked arguably one of the biggest extra points in recent Bronco history as his boot propelled Denton to a 28-27 thrilling come-from-behind victory over Carrollton R.L. Turner.

Husband’s extra point with just 1:19 to go in the game came after quarterback Dentton Hudspeth’s keeper from 1 yard out. His score capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive that saw the Broncos go for it on fourth-and-1 at their own 29-yard line with 3:10 left.

That fourth-and-1 conversion led to a 60-yard run from Denzell King, who finished the night with 112 yards and one score on 17 carries.

“I was so neverous; I had never played in a game like that before,” Husbands said. “I was just sitting there thinking I hope it doesn’t get blocked. I knew everyone was watching me and counting on me, and it feels good knowing we got it done.”

For the second straight week, Denton couldn’t breathe easy on the final possession, as the Lions set up shop at their own 46-yard line after a 21-yard kick return. Three plays later they had it first-and-10 at the Bronco 20-yard line. Two incomplete passes set up a third-down play, and Denton was called for pass interference. With just 11 seconds remaining in the contest, Turner had the ball first and goal at the 6.

Following a timeout, a fumbled snap resulted in a pileup in which it was ruled the Lions had the ball with just four seconds left. A last-second desperation to try to get a field goal attempt off didn’t beat the clock, and Denton escaped with win No. 1.

“Honestly at the end I was thinking we’re going to have a kid step up and make a play,” said Denton coach Randy Patzkowski. “Our kids never quit again; they kept fighting and working. That’s just their nature — they aren’t going to lay down. I don’t know how many times you can keep getting kicked in and battle back, but they find a way.”

With the game tied at 21 entering the fourth quarter, a Denton miscue opened the door for Turner (0-1). Hudspeth threw a lateral away, and the Lions scooped up the ball at the Denton 12-yard line. Three plays later, a 12-yard pass from Pedro Galvan to Christian Hernandez made the score 27-21. The extra point failed with 9:51 left.

Each team had the ball and was forced to punt before Denton (1-1) got the ball back for its winning drive.

Leading 14-7 at the half, Denton  went three-and-out, and the Lions responded by going 59 yards in two plays, including a 55-yard pass from Galvan to Jahaziel Patterson. Galvan, who threw for more than 2,000 yards last year, finished the night with 217 yards and two scores.

King brought Denton back as he scored on a 13-yard run to cap an eight-play, 55-yard drive to give the Broncos the 21-14 lead with 5:56 to go in the third quarter.

Turner answered, getting a 1-yard run from Dekivin Stanley to finish a 10-play, 67-yard drive to tie it at 21 entering the fourth.

Hudspeth hit Gevonta Maple on a 14-yard pass to cap a three-play, 13-yard drive with 8:08 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 7. The score was set up by Matthew Perry, who returned a Lion punt to the 13.

Senior Clayton Hubbard then picked off a Galvan pass on the next play from scrimmage, setting up the Broncos at their own 47-yard line. Ten plays later Hudspeth found Manny Mendoza, who was drilled on the play but hung onto the 18-yard pass in the front of the end zone. That play capped a 53-yard drive.
