Football: Bearcats focused on state semifinals

01:22 AM CST on Saturday, December 5, 2009

By Matthew Muench / Staff Writer

Pilot Point head coach Blake Feldt likes his team’s mindset heading into today’s Class 2A Division I state semifinal game against Brady.

A big reason is the Bearcats’ attitude, which is the same one the Bearcats have worn heading into every game they have played this season.

By the way, Pilot Point (13-0) is undefeated entering the game, slated for 2 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Stephenville.

“We haven’t lost this season for a reason,” Feldt said. “We are really focused right now like we have been since August. … We will not be satisfied if we don’t win these next two games.”

The Bearcats are in the same position as they were in last year.

Last year, Pilot Point reached the state semifinals thanks to a last-second field goal off the foot of Ruben Martinez in the region championship game against Winnsboro.

Martinez was the hero again last week in a 24-23 win over Godley thanks to another clutch kick.

“Pretty amazing,” Feldt said.

But last year the Bearcats could not ride the emotion through the next round, losing to Muleshoe 35-10. Can Pilot Point feed off the emotional victory better this year?

“I hope so,” Feldt said. “Last year we had lots of injuries once the playoffs started and we were just trying to make it at that point in time. This year we are healthy and we are bound and determined to win these two football games. We have our stingers out.”

Brady (13-0) also boasts a perfect record, but the Bulldogs have not been to the state semifinals since 1961. The inexperience doesn’t worry Brady head coach Glen Jones, who said he enjoys the underdog role.

“We will be ready,” he said. “Of course we are happy to get a chance to play in December and we know not a lot of people are giving us a chance. But we decided to take a team vote and we voted that we are going to go ahead and go play the game.”

The way Brady plays offense is old school. It runs its offense out of the Wing-T, a run-oriented formation rarely used on modern gridirons.

“We really, really concentrate on our fakes and we really try to make the ball disappear,” Jones said. “I think so many teams run one back and shotgun. So when they see us, it is something they have never really seen.”

The Bearcats have already beaten a Wing-T offense in the playoffs when they dropped Gunter. But Gunter’s was a different variation of Brady’s rushing attack.

“You have to have an extremely disciplined defense to stop us,” Jones said.

Brady has many weapons to choose from in the rushing attack. Five different rushers -- led by running backs Jake Long and Jose Ramirez -- have between 700 and 1,000 yards on the ground this season.

“We are so balanced,” Jones said. “We have a lot of people who are involved in this offense. We try and distribute the ball around to everyone.”

On the season, the Bulldogs are averaging 327 rushing yards per game while scoring 63 rushing touchdowns.

“We are going to have to be at our very best and be very disciplined to stop them,” Feldt said. “Because they know how to run the football. There is no doubt about that.”

During last week’s 43-34 win against Amarillo River Road, the Bulldogs rushed for 390 yards and four different players scored.

“They do a great job offensively,” Feldt said. “They are just very efficient and they don’t make many mistakes.”

Pilot Point’s rushing attack is no slouch either. Led by star Jarman Johnson and his 2,489 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns, the Bearcats are averaging about 310 yards rushing per game.

Jones said the key to stopping Pilot Point is slowing down Johnson.

“He is good, but we have seen some other backs who are the real deal, also,” Jones said. “I am not sure if [Johnson] is the best we have seen this year but he is close. He is a jitterbug runner.”

Feldt said if his offensive line can stay grounded, the Bearcats should come out on top.

“They do a great job of putting pressure on the offense with lots of blitzes,” Feldt said. “We have to be at our very best offensively. If you don’t bring your ‘A’ game, you are going to get beat.”
