Girls basketball: Lady Chaps win with defense

12:20 AM CST on Tuesday, November 20, 2007

By Monty Miller / Staff Writer

AUBREY – The Lady Chaparrals put on a defensive clinic Monday night, and their students were the girls from Whitewright, who couldn’t seem to get away from Aubrey’s smothering pressure.

Aubrey won, 40-14.

The win was a team effort, as eight Aubrey girls scored points in the game, and no one player dominated.

Forward Sidney Carr scored 11 points to lead the Lady Chaps in scoring. Kelsie Carmichael also played a very nice game, scoring her first points on a long 3-pointer that hit nothing but net. She finished with nine points. Melissa Reynolds added seven points, four of which came on free throws.

“I thought we played with a lot more energy,” Aubrey head coach Johnny Hodge said.

The Lady Chaparrals (3-1) poured it on from the beginning, scoring 20 of the first 23 points and building a 21-8 lead at the half.

They scored the first six points of the third quarter as well, as the Lady Tigers couldn’t get anything going on either end of the floor.

“On defense we struggled a little,” Hodge said. “And our execution on offense could have been better.”

Chelsy Lipsey led Whitewright (0-1) with seven points.

Aubrey boys fall to Whitewright

Despite getting off to a woefully slow start, the Aubrey boys fought back in a physical game to compete with state-ranked Whitewright on Monday, losing 61-49.

The Chaparrals only scored four points in the first quarter, getting hammered on both ends of the court.

There was a reason for Aubrey’s slow start though, and that reason was the Tigers’ Matthew Smith, a 6-10 center, who controlled the paint from the tip. He had five points, three rebounds and three blocks in the first quarter, including a crowd-pleasing one-handed dunk and a hard block that ended up in the bleachers.

Smith was injured at the beginning of the third quarter and didn’t return until the end of the game. He finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in about 24 minutes.

Smith’s departure corresponds exactly with Aubrey’s comeback attempt.

Aubrey began to get many more looks at the basket and cut the lead to 10 by the beginning of the fourth quarter. At that point, the Chaps were getting good looks and getting to the line, but their shots just would not fall.

Aubrey head coach Jackie Crisp said he was impressed with his team’s performance, considering they hadn’t practiced because a lot of the players also play football.

“Our conditioning looked pretty good,” he said. “We ran the floor well with one of the state’s best teams.”

Aubrey only suited seven players for the game, while Whitewright had more than seven players score in the game.

David Robertson’s shooting kept Aubrey in the game most of the night. He led the Chaparrals with 16 points.

Giles Williams added 11 points on 10 shots, including two important 3-pointers.

The Chaparrals next play at 9 a.m. Friday at the Fantasy of Lights tournament in Wichita Falls.
