Triathlon: Pioneers' triathlon set for Sunday

11:53 PM CDT on Friday, August 7, 2009

By Todd Jorgenson / Sports Editor

For its third installment, the Pioneer Power Sprint will add a little flair.

The course for the triathlon on the Texas Woman’s University campus will remain the same. But participants will find new flourishes surrounding the race, such as live entertainment and a pancake breakfast to spice up the atmosphere.

The third annual race, scheduled for Sunday morning, will again act as a fundraiser for the TWU soccer program.

“It will be a fun atmosphere,” said TWU head soccer coach Fleur Benatar, who launched the Pioneer Power Sprint in 2007. “We’re looking forward to a great race.”

The new touches will be provided by Dallas Athletes Racing, the Coppell-based company hired to manage the race for the first time.

Among the changes Dallas Athletes will bring, all finishers will receive custom-made medals for finishing, and will have their names announced as they cross the finish line. They also will receive the usual goody bags, awards and T-shirts.

“We want to make it a real party atmosphere,” said race organizer Dan Jones. “We’re all about being competitive and fun, but we have a lot of first-timers, and we want them to have a good experience.”

The race, sanctioned by USA Triathlon, will begin at 6:45 a.m. with a 300-meter swim in TWU’s indoor pool at Pioneer Hall, followed by a 20-kilometer bicycle course and a 3.3-mile run.

Both the bike course and two-lap running course will begin and end in front of the Blagg-Huey Library.

Registration is still available at $69 per athlete, with a USA Triathlon membership required to compete.

Benatar said she is happy with how the event has grown in its three-year existence. She expects about 275 competitors on Sunday, which is close to the same as last year.

Since the bike and running courses are each flat and fast by triathlon standards, Benatar said the race appeals both to advanced triathletes tuning up for major races, and to first-timers looking for an entry into the sport.

“We’ve had a lot of returners and a lot of new people. It’s a great race for beginners,” Benatar said. “In the race community, people know about this race.”

This year’s race was moved to August from its traditional July date primarily to secure a better weekend on the local triathlon calendar, Benatar said.

The proceeds from the race will benefit the TWU soccer program, with players serving as volunteers on race day. But Benatar said the event also provides a positive showcase for the university by bringing so many new faces to campus.

Jones said the course layout is a primary reason the race has been able to sustain its popularity among area triathletes.

“The bike course for this particular course I really like,” Jones said. “The campus is pretty. It’s a nice venue for a race.”
