The Woman’s Club will enter the Christmas lighting project being promoted by the city Commission to make all outstanding public and semi-public buildings a part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the invention of the electric light, and also to observe the holiday season. Mrs. D.R. Turner and Mrs. W.C. Edwards were named to see the details of the plan.

Hoover’s new budget focuses on war spending

Washington — President Hoover today gave the public his Federal “Budget at a glance” for those who have not the time to wade through the staggering compilation of figures that accompanied his budget message to Congress. The statement of today showed that approximately 72 cents of every dollar to be spent by the Federal government during the next fiscal year must go to pay for past wars and preparedness for any that may occur in the future.

Direct wire to carry detailed report of game

A direct telegraph wire from the press box at the Teachers College Eagle Field will carry a play-by-play account of the Denton-Marshall game this afternoon to fans at Marshall. This is the first time such an elaborate report has been sent from here on a game, although a telephone play-by-play report of the Denton Eagle-Trinity Tiger game at Waxahachie was brought here this season.

Denton Broncs overcome Marshall in last period

Outplaying, outfighting and outsmarting the Marshall High School Mavericks, the Denton High School Bronco eleven captured its first bi-district title by taking a glorious 20 to 14 victory on the Denton Teachers College Eagle Field before a thrill-wild crowd of approximately 4,000 fans Friday afternoon.

Santa Fe Railway to break ground

Ceremonies starting the building of the new $7.5 million Dallas-Denton main line for the Santa Fe Railway will be held next Saturday. A luncheon at the Baker Hotel in Dallas will start the day’s program with the ground breaking ceremonies to follow. State Senator Lyndon Johnson and Price Daniel and Congressman Frank Ikard — all instrumental in Denton’s securing permission to be serviced by the Santa Fe — have been invited.

Dickie elected head of Texas Farmers Union

Alex Dickie, Jr., Krum rancher, has been elected president to the Texas Farmers Union for 1955. Dickie is president of the Denton County Farmers Union and immediate past president of the Denton County Livestock Asso-ciation.

New administration building at NT set

Construction of a new administration building and a president’s home at NTSC will begin about March 1, President J.C. Matthews announced Saturday.

Wyatt buys ground for store in Denton

Negotiations for land between North Elm and Bolivar streets and negotiations on construction of a storm sewer along Parkway Street were things of the past this morning — Wyatt Food Stores Inc. is coming to Denton. Construction of the store will begin about March 1.

Mrs. Saunders dies at 77

Mrs. Frances Hanson Saunders, widow of Dr. Charles H. Saunders and prominent in church and women’s club work, died Monday night in a local hospital, following a heart attack. Mrs. Saunders, 77, came to Denton 52 years ago, after her marriage to Dr. Saunders on Aug. 12, 1902. Mrs. Saunders was one of the first piano teachers here. She was organist at the First Presbyterian Church, U.S., for about 25 years, and she also played at the opening exercises of the newly founded CIA (now TSCW).

Food prices leap to five-year high

Washington (AP) — Food prices jumped by the highest amount in five years last month, helping to push overall wholesale prices up 13 percent, the government said today.

Favorites elected at Denton High

Elections for sophomore, junior and senior class favorites took place Wednesday and Thursday and winners were announced Friday night at the Christmas dance.

Sophomore favorites are Jean-na Hartman and Scott Brown; junior favorites are Michelle Cole and Bill McCoy; senior favorites are Jaquie Johnson and Terry Word.

Miss DHS is Aurora Austin and Mr. DHS in Cletus Clark.

Spring festival shaping

While Christmas is at the top of most people’s minds, members of the Spring Fling committee are preparing for another celebration to be held three months from now. Sponsored by the City of Denton, Greater Denton Arts Council and the Denton Cham-ber of Commerce, the Spring Fling will be held March 28-30.

Regents formally OK Vandiver appointment

Dr. Frank E. Vandiver was formally confirmed as the 11th president of North Texas State University and Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in a specially called meeting of the Board of Regents Sunday.
