More than $10,000 sliced off city budget for year

Tentative reductions, chiefly in salary slashes for employees, which would effect a saving estimated at between $10,000 and $11,000 in the 1932-33 city budget were announced at the public hearing for the budget, held Monday evening in the municipal auditorium. The total proposed budget has been announced as approximately $264,000. The proposed cuts would bring it down to around $253,000.
Texas vote of 49 gives Hoover enough to win
MINERAL WELLS (AP) — Texas' 49 votes in the Republican National Convention today were added to the list, sufficient to re-nominate President Hoover.
Automobile tire levy is reduced
WASHINGTON (AP) — The senate finance committee today reduced the proposed 10 percent sales tax on automobile tires and tubes to 2.25 cents per pound on tires and 4 cents per pound on tubes.
20th anniversary of Presbyterian W.A. observed
The 20th anniversary of the Women's Auxiliary of the First Presbyterian Church was observed Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. W.T. Evers as hostess. The reception rooms in the Evers home were cleared of all modern furnishings, and rag rugs, old tables and chairs resembling mountain furnishing were used.

Lake is over spillway top at Lewisville
As water from the rain-swollen Garza-Little Elm Reservoir continued to roll over Lewisville Dam's uncontrolled spillway this morning, the Weather Bureau Saturday night called for at least partial relief this weekend from the severe weather that has plagued the Denton area for four days. Fields and highway shoulders were converted into makeshift boat docking sites Sunday as an estimated record-breaking 50,000 persons toured Denton County's No. 1 tourist attraction — Garza-Little Elm Reservoir.
Denton Country Club plans pool, member drive
A swimming pool and other new facilities are planned by the Denton Country Club at the conclusion of a vigorous new membership campaign, which will end June 20. When the goal of 50 new members is reached, construction of the 40x25 concrete pool will start immediately.
Rites set tonight for 168 Denton graduates
The 168 graduates in Denton High School's Class of 1957 will be joined by hundreds of parents and friends tonight at 8 when the annual baccalaureate services are held at the NTSC Main Auditorium. The class is so big — it's one of the largest in Denton High's history — that the end-of-school religious service is being held in the 2,300 seat NT auditorium in order to take care of the expected crowds.
Principal names nine honor grads
The nine honor graduates of Fred Moore High School were announced today by Principal Charles B. Redd. They are among the 26 graduates who will receive diplomas at commencement exercises at the school auditorium Wednesday at 8 p.m. The honor students are Cecil Maxine Orr, Alma Jean Price, Gladys Dean Johnson, Doris Bell, Reder J. Simms, Elizabeth Gilbert, Homer Herod, John E. Ware and Bobby McDade.

Arts institute presents award to Denton native
Artist Myron Stout, a Distinguished Alumnus of North Texas State University and a Denton native, was presented an Award of Merit medal by the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in New York City May 19.
Denton's Square thriving despite gloomy prediction
For the past 20 years, local economic fortunetellers have been describing Denton's Square as a dead-end street. And yet, as cars go round and round each business day, diligently searching for parking spaces, merchants go on and on. Perhaps the news is merchants on the Square feel more confident about the commercial center — with eateries like Ellington's, Denton County Hamburger and On The Square and Copper Kettle, as well as the revitalized Fine Arts Theatre — and they're looking forward to the future.
Dry ground broken for Ray Roberts Lake
The floor at the Denton Civic Center remained intact throughout Friday's groundbreaking ceremony for Ray Roberts Lake. Instead, a pile of dirt on the olive-drab tarpaulin sufficed for the spading by the lake's namesake, former Congressman Ray Roberts of Denton. However, several of the 450 people gathered at the civic center wondered if the ceiling would hold up during the festivities, as remnants from the morning's rain dropped through.
Al McNatt named to dealers board
Al McNatt, president of Al McNatt Chevrolet in Denton, has been elected to the Texas Automobile Dealers Association Board of Directors, officials in San Antonio reported. He will serve a three-year term on the board representing an eight-county area.
