Heavy consumption of water reported

Approximately 1,200,000 gallons of water was consumed by Denton residents Thursday, according to municipal utilities superintendent W. N. Harris.
Daily consumption has increased about 100,000 gallons daily during the present hot weather, Harris said.
Long delegates are given seat
Chicago Stadium (AP) — The supporters of Franklin D. Roosevelt won by the narrowest of margins their first test in the Democratic convention today, seating Huey Long's Louisiana delegation and moving along toward the election of Roosevelt-backed Senator Walsh of Montana as permanent convention chairman.
Edna Ferber's ‘So Big’ to show at Palace Theater
So Big, starring Barbara Stanwyck, will open at the Palace Theater next Monday for a two-day showing. The film was adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Edna Ferber.
Al Smith leads movement against nomination of Roosevelt
Chicago (AP) — Alfred E. Smith donned the epaulets as leader of the opposition to Franklin D. Roosevelt today and began a move to unite supporters of other candidates into a solid group to block the nomination of the New York governor.

Civic leaders say that Denton needs a plan
The starting point for any city that wants a master plan is with the residents of that city; the residents must have a basic desire to make their community a beautiful and practical city. Denton's civic leaders and city officials had this advice to consider today as they looked forward to the possibility of improving the outlook for Denton's future. The advice was given by one of the Southwest's leading city plan experts, Richard N. Kuhlman of Norman, Okla.
Missile base to protect Dallas-Fort Worth area
Since December 1953, when the first Nike battery was ready for action, the Army Antiaircraft Command has set up a nationwide surface-to-air missile defense system for important localities. The missile base near Denton will be one of four planned to provide protection for the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Incorporation is sought to block future moves by city
Lake Dallas — Already apparent losers in their campaign to retain the Lake Dallas name for Garza-Little Elm reservoir, residents of this lakeside community this week moved into high gear to develop their own form of local city government.
12 radio circuits to be added in Denton
Denton telephone users, around the middle of August, will have the use of 12 additional circuits to Dallas and four to Sherman when the General Telephone Co. of the Southwest puts into service its microwave system, district manager Harry S. West said.

Charles, Diana look forward to bringing up baby
London (AP) — Prince Charles once said he suffered a lonely childhood, often separated from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and father, Prince Philip, when they traveled on royal duties. But his new son is expected to enjoy a modern family upbringing under the close and watchful eyes of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Charles' 56-year-old mother has said she will never abdicate, thus leaving the prince and princess free to be parents, untroubled by the heavy responsibilities of British monarchy.
Carol Channing will attend benefit
Carol Channing, who has been appearing in Hello Dolly in Dallas, will attend a gala event Wednesday benefiting the Center for Marketing and Design and the Dallas Museum of Fashion at North Texas State University.
The black-tie event, at which designer Oscar de la Renta will be guest of honor, will include a cocktail hour at 7, dinner at 8 and a fashion show at 9:30. Neiman Marcus will show the fall de la Renta collection. Tickets at $100 each are available by calling the president's office at NTSU.
Dorms demolished at TWU
The demolition of Capps Hall at 11 a.m. Tuesday marked the beginning of the end of old dormitory row at Texas Woman's University. Capps is one of three residence halls on Oakland scheduled to give way to TWU's master plan for a new era.
The land will be used for recreation and parking, TWU President Mary Evelyn Blagg Huey said during a recent news conference. From 1918 until their retirement in 1970, Capps and Lowry halls housed students in a manner to which Guinn and Stark hall dwellers are not accustomed.
Main Street: Helping cities restore downtown vitality
"You can only save that which you can find somebody to pay for." That's the whole idea behind Main Street, USA: Saving downtown areas by getting someone to restore, refurbish, and revitalize businesses on Main Street, or downtown, or — in Denton — on the Square.
Paula Peters, director for the Main Street Center in Austin, was in Denton Monday and spoke to about 40 members of the newly formed Denton Central Business District Association.
