Alan Peppard: Oscar winner 'Young Victoria' has a Dallas connection

12:00 AM CDT on Monday, March 15, 2010

apeppard@dallasnews.com

Dallas' Forbes 400 oilman-turned-film producer Tim Headington scored at this month's Academy Awards when the film The Young Victoria took home an Oscar for best costume design. Tim produced the movie with his film partner Graham King (The Departed, The Aviator, Traffic), as well as Martin Scorsese and Sarah, Duchess of York.

The costume Oscar is well deserved; the kittenish Emily Blunt had to be transformed into the prim and homely Queen Victoria. According to legend, the monarch's wedding night advice to her daughters was "Lie back and think of England."

Miss Blunt is the same actress who stripped down to panties and high heels in Charlie Wilson's War and told Tom Hanks, "It's hotter here in D.C. than in Nacogdoches, so I hope you don't mind, I took off a few of my clothes."

'Victoria' sells tickets

And while The Young Victoria is never going to challenge Avatar at the box office, there are pockets where it has taken on a cult following akin to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Not surprisingly, one of those pockets is in Dallas. The Angelika Dallas has been showing the film to healthy-sized crowds since Dec. 18. The film will be released on DVD on April 20.

Rum runners

FYI: Headington and King are also producing the film adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel The Rum Diary.

The late gonzo godfather penned the book around 1959-1960 but didn't publish it until 1998.

Johnny Depp stars as the Thompson-esque journalist Paul Kemp who lives in Puerto Rico during the Eisenhower years and writes for the San Jose Star.

Midland on location

Fox continues to be sweet on Dallas as a spot to shoot TV pilots. The new show Midland sets up in Dallas this week with Jon Voight playing a Texas oil legend. (Lest you doubt Mr. Voight's capacity to play over-the-top Southerners, take another look at the John Grisham-based film The Rainmaker, in which he plays big-time lawyer Leo F. Drummond.)

We hear Susan Saffron Fine Jewelry in Inwood Village has been chosen as a location where the son-in-law to Mr. Voight's character will buy jewelry for his mistress.

Gold comes home

It's easier to bear Team USA's hockey loss to Team Canada at last month's Vancouver Olympics knowing that Brenden Morrow's gold medal won't be living in Canada, but at his home in the Park Cities.

Last week, the Dallas Stars left-winger arrived for dinner at Al Biernat's steakhouse carrying his new gold medal.

Add it to the list of other sports awards that have visited Al's, including the British Open claret jug (thanks to hometown golfer Justin Leonard) and the Stanley Cup.

No Tie preview

Saturday night, AIDS Services of Dallas kicked off plans for its March 27 No Tie Dinner with a sponsor party at the home of No Tie chairman Dennis Kershner.

On the 27th, sponsors will host dinners all over town and ask guests to make a suggested donation of $40 to AIDS Services. The dinners can be large or small, casual or formal, catered or potluck.

Afterward, everyone will converge on the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field for dessert, dancing, a silent auction and the presentation of the Sheila Dolezal Humanitarian Award.
