Resourceful pet owner uses paper plate to protect cat's ear
Dear Heloise: My cat recently scratched his ear. I put ointment on it, then made him a collar from a cheap paper plate. I cut the middle circle out and cut the sides some to fit him. Then I wrapped the collar around his neck so it wasn't too tight or too loose and stapled the collar together. Pretty cheap, huh? And you can change it anytime it needs it.

Dear Heloise: We travel with two small Chihuahuas, 4 and 7 pounds. Here are our ideas: Always clean up after your pet, no matter what size. We use a portable fence so they can play around us without a leash, but we never leave them alone. Be sure to carry all their papers, as state laws vary.

Dear Heloise: This month, we purchased a name-brand flea-and-tick squeeze-on repellent and applied it to the back of our cat's neck. After a few minutes, our cat went into serious convulsions. We called the vet, who told us to come to his office immediately.
