Colorful caladiums add flair to summer garden
Caladiums are as much a fixture in the summer landscape as bedding begonias and impatiens. Landscapers and gardeners plant them en masse in shady borders and fill big containers with their bright colors and bold markings.

If the bulbs won't grow here, there's always mail order
I've been leafing through a certain Virginia bulb catalog for years, window shopping for an extravagant show of tulips and daffodils (just looking, because so many tulips and Narcissus species do not prosper here). I don't know how I overlooked it all these years, but Brent and Becky's Bulbs also ships bouquets made from its bulb crop.

Trying to keep both chickens and earthworms happy
I have practiced composting in my back yard for several years. With my neighbor's grass clippings (he refused to leave them on his lawn), lots of tree leaves, vegetable and fruit scraps from the kitchen and many, many dead plants to contribute to the heap, I have no shortage of material.

Scoop up hard-to-find varieties at April plant sale
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – We could be plant hunters. We could renew our passports, apply for federal papers to bring foreign plants into the United States, ascend Tibetan mountains and slog through South American rain forests to find rare and uncommon plants for our gardens. But why, when there are intrepid plant geeks here in Texas willing to do the work for us?

All the pretty flowers ... that will grow here
Plant lust. It's a terrible thing. I stay up late studying the new crop of garden catalogs, pretending I have the money, garden space and time enough to grow everything I see on their impossibly perfect pages.
