A zeal for pottery-making inspired Phillip Purdy to search for life and land beyond the city. Feeling boxed in by the creative confines of a small garage kiln in his Dallas house, he says, "I wanted to do more with my pottery, and I couldn't have a larger kiln in the city." He ended up going south, where he built a prairie oasis.

Interior architect Suist Tan knew he'd met like-minded modernists after Craig York and Wendy Lynch "kept driving by, peeping into the windows" of the 1956 ranch house he was selling. Mr. Tan, a commercial space planner, had revamped the aging, northwest Dallas ranch in the spirit of an urban loft. The couple, converts to modern, were taken with his light-conscious renovation.
