Water conservation tips
10:14 PM CDT on Saturday, May 12, 2007
•Fix leaks: A slow drip on a kitchen or bathroom faucet can waste 15 to 20 gallons of water a day; a leaky toilet as much as 100 gallons of water per day
•Turn off faucets when not in use
•Install low-flow toilets and shower heads
•Run dishwashers and washing machines with full loads only or adjust water levels for partial loads.
•Reduce your lawn-watering frequency to no more than once every five days to encourage deeper, more drought-tolerant roots
•Don't overwater; most Texas lawns will stay alive and healthy with only 1.5 inches of water once a week
•Mulch plants and trees to retain moisture and prevent evaporation
•Sprinklers that mist or throw small droplets of water into the air can lose to evaporation as much as 50 percent of the water they emit. Use a hand-held hose or a drip irrigation system to get water to precisely where it's needed.
•Make sure sprinklers aren't watering your driveway and sidewalk.
