Summer plant sales for persistent gardeners
12:00 AM CDT on Thursday, July 2, 2009
Local retail nursery employees don't want to stand in the heat with a water hose any more than you do. July Fourth signals the end of the active gardening season until September. Retailers will still stock the hardiest of landscape plants and sturdy summer color for refreshing containers and beds, but they'll try to move much of their spring inventory by steeply marking down prices.
If you're willing to expend the time, energy and water to keep new transplants alive, this is a good time to score some bargains. Here's how several North Texas garden centers plan to move 'em out:
Bruce Miller Nurseries, 1000 E. Belt Line Road, Richardson; 455 W. Prosper Trail, Prosper; and 4350 Van Zandt County Road at State Highway 19, Edgewood: 40 percent off all plants
Brumley Gardens, 10540 Church Road, Dallas: All sedums in 4-inch pots to one-gallons, originally $4.99 to $9.99, are half price. Friday through July 12
Calloway's Nursery, multiple locations: Cora periwinkles 79 cents each, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday; select shrubs half price Saturday and Sunday
Elizabeth Anna's Old World Garden, 2825 Eighth Ave., Fort Worth. All plants are 75 percent off. Today through 2 p.m. Friday
North Haven Gardens, 7700 Northaven Road, Dallas: 25 percent off all in-stock plants, including trees, herbs, vegetables and greenhouse specimens. Friday through July 11
Rohde's Nursery, 1651 Wall St., Garland: 40 percent off all plants; 30 percent off certain containers and other garden wares. Through Sunday
Strong's Nursery and Garden Center, 1900 N. I-35 E, south of Sandy Lake Road, Carrollton. All plants 50 percent off July 11 and 12
