Dog About Town: Day-tripping to McKinney and more fun this weekend

03:58 AM CST on Thursday, November 19, 2009

B.K.
Our Jaunt of the Week is spending the day in downtown McKinney, where you can stroll and shop in charming surroundings. On a recent Saturday we started out at the farmers market in historic Chestnut Square, then headed over to the courthouse square for a leisurely alfresco lunch followed by store-hopping. Many of the businesses welcome pooches – we even met a few shop dogs.

The square also hosts frequent events, including Second Saturdays, which feature wine, music and shopping until 10 p.m.; Dickens of a Christmas, Nov. 27 through 29 this year; and the Krewe of Barkus parade in February. For a schedule, go to www.downtownmckinney.com.

Dog-friendly attractions

Bishop Arts District (restaurant, store details above): This little enclave in Oak Cliff is as dog-friendly as it is charming. After a leisurely meal – your options include Tillman's Roadhouse, Eno's Pizza Tavern and Bolsa – check out the stores, many of which allow four-legged shoppers, too. You'll find funky furnishings at Fête! Home Collection, divine soaps at Shambhala Body Gallery, all things stylish at Epiphany and one-of-a-kind treasures at Make. And make sure you stop by Zola's Everyday Vintage, where you can say hi to the shop cat, and Green Pet, which is teeming with goodies that are good for you. We also love that the shops stay open late on weekends and for special events, such as their 1st Thursdays. Find a schedule at bishopartsdistrict.com.

Buchanan's (next sale Nov. 28-29): We're regular strollers/shoppers at this monthly antique market in Fair Park. There are always plenty of hands to shake and dogs to sniff. buchananmarkets.com

Chestnut Square Historic Village (outside areas): On Saturday mornings you can pick up homemade dog treats at their farmers market. 315 S. Chestnut St., McKinney, 972-562-8790
