Two-Minute Expert: Grill sandwiches with a waffle iron

11:17 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 2, 2008

If you enjoy grilled sandwiches, don't buy a sandwich press to make paninis.

Give your waffle iron lunch duty. The bread toasts to a buttery crisp, and the filling melts to perfection.

Preheat a waffle maker on medium-high. Generously butter two slices of bread. Lay one slice buttered side down and add cheese and other fillings such as ham and thin pear slices; don't overfill. Add the other slice of bread buttered side up. Close the waffle maker and grill until golden brown. (Grilled cheese takes a couple of cycles in my waffle maker to achieve gooey-rich melted cheese and crispy golden bread.) The time will vary depending on the waffle-maker and the sandwich, so keep a close eye on the process.
