Si Tapas restaurant is a fresh take from a familiar face

12:11 PM CDT on Thursday, July 2, 2009

The charming State-Thomas cottage that was long home to Watel's has changed accents – from French to Spanish. SI TAPAS RESTAURANT AND BAR is the latest act from owner Ildefonso Jimenez. The affable restaurateur founded Café Madrid, ran Hola! on McKinney Avenue for eight years and even dabbled briefly in bubbles with Brüt: a Champagne Boutique at Hotel Palomar. Now, Jimenez has returned to his first love with small-plate Spanish cuisine.

Small-plate special: Dallas restaurateur Ildefonso Jimenez rolls out the charm again with his new Si Tapas Restaurant and Bar in Uptown.

Full-course entrees, salads and soups are joined by nearly 50 tapas options, including well-seasoned potato omelets, grilled asparagus and Spanish rice ladled with zesty tomato sauce and topped with a fried egg. Jimenez also offers a perfect hangover cure (handy, since Si's lounge stays open until 2 a.m. on weekends): "We're going to cook paella outside for Sunday brunch. We have a great backyard with a view of downtown."

The views inside are equally pretty, thanks to a new crimson design scheme. "From bullfighting to a cold pitcher of Sangria, people associate Spain with red," says Jimenez. "I think it shows off our passion."
