Foraging: Biscotti flavor that stands up to your espresso

03:59 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 30, 2008

We're finicky about store-bought biscotti – too often, they disappoint with blandness. But Dunkluv Biscotti, a small company in Grapevine, makes some wonderful versions of the twice-baked cookies.

Sara and Matthew McLain started the company about a year ago, making five varieties: almond, honey, lemon, cranberry-walnut and chocolate chunk. Honey and Nielsen-Massey vanilla lend a distinctive flavor to these cookies, which are pleasantly sweeter than traditional biscotti.

Our favorite is the almond. Unlike other almond biscotti, which use a modest amount of whole almonds, this version uses loads of thinly sliced almonds, resulting in a more pronounced toasted-nut flavor. The chocolate chunk is a close second-favorite. It's studded with 60-percent dark chocolate nuggets and chopped pecans.

The McLains make their biscotti with all-natural ingredients. Even without preservatives, the cookies have a reasonably long shelf life of one month.

Handsomely packaged, the individually wrapped biscotti make a great gift (the company ships nationwide via priority mail). Each box holds eight full-size biscotti and sells for $12, plus shipping. Or order The Collection, which is an assortment of flavors.

Order online at Dunkluv.com.
