Sorbeteria, a sorbet shop that opened recently across from NorthPark Center, offers a refreshing fruit fix.

All 16 of the store's sorbets are made from fresh fruit, much of it purchased from farms in South Texas.

Besides the obvious fat-free boast, these sorbets have less than a teaspoon of added sugar per serving. Still, they are plenty sweet, thanks to the ripe fruit used to make them.

Manager James Donahoe says the store makes its sorbets with 90 percent fruit, whereas most sorbet recipes call for 80 percent to 85 percent fruit. We sampled several winners on a recent visit. Apricot tangerine delivered intensely fruity flavors with just the right touch of tanginess. Flavors such as piña colada, margarita and Cosmo burst with the same fruit flavors used in classic cocktails, without the alcohol.

Prices are $3 for a single scoop and $4 for a double. You also can take home a carton for a quick-fix dessert; prices are $6 a pint, $12 a quart, and $15 a half-gallon. (Pour sparkling wine over scoops of sorbet for an interesting twist.)

Sorbeteria also sells sorbet smoothies ($4 for a regular, $5 for a large) that combine one or two sorbets with fresh fruit. We liked the Doubleberry (Marion Blackberry and strawberry sorbets, with fresh berries); besides great flavor, it packs a wallop of antioxidants. For $1 extra, you can add a shot of these health-nut juices to any smoothie: Açai Energy, Mangosteen Flexibility or Noni Immune.
