Tasting Note: Big flavor from Petite Petit
12:00 AM CDT on Wednesday, April 30, 2008
If you went to the Savor Dallas International Grand Tasting, you may have noticed the whimsical Big Top label of 2005 Petite Petit at the Michael David table. The wine also won a gold medal in this year's Dallas Morning News Wine Competition.
The "petite" is Lodi petite sirah (85 percent), and the "petit" is petit verdot (15 percent), portrayed on the label as a couple of lounging pachyderms. Perchance these also represent Michael and David Phillips, the brothers behind the wines?
Predictably, this is a large, jammy California red with lots of ripe blueberry and blackberry fruit mingled with a spicy black-pepper kick and friendly tannins that don't pull your cheeks inside out. As for that big flavor, the label says, "Both [grapes] do brag of very large trunks."
You could serve this wine with barbecued ribs, grilled pork chops or pork tenderloin with savory blueberry sauce. But please, not elephant.
It's about $25 at Whole Foods Market, Crush! A Wine Boutique, Grand Tastings, State Street Spirits, Mr. G's, Kindred Spirits Lakewood, CJ's Beer and Fine Wine and S&K Beverage.
