Trump adds hotel, name to the Las Vegas Strip
09:18 PM CDT on Monday, April 28, 2008
After years of rumors and near misses, the Trump name is finally a part of the Las Vegas scene. The official opening of the Trump Tower took place April 11, presided over by the Donald and an all-star cast of city and industry luminaries and beauty queens.
The $1.2 billion Trump International Hotel & Tower is 64 stories and has 1,282 studio, one-bedroom and penthouse suites. TRUMP is illuminated at the top of the building and the name of the featured restaurant is simply his initials: DJT. The studios that rent as hotel rooms start at $349 per night.
Ladies play: AGO, the new upscale Italian eatery at the Hard Rock, is running a special called "Ladies Night Out" through the end of this month. Tuesdays through Thursdays between 5 and 10 p.m., ladies who dine in the lounge get 50 percent off food and drinks from the bar menu.
Menu selections include sliced tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella, and a 10-ounce Black Angus New York steak.
Summer sirens: Summer hours are in progress for the "Sirens of TI" pirate show at Treasure Island. Weather permitting, the shows run at 7, 8:30, 10 and 11:30 every night. Since debuting in 2003, more than 4,250 shows have performed for about 9.6 million customers, but not one ticket has been sold to this excellent free spectacle.
Restaurants open: The Palazzo's roster has expanded with the openings of Dos Caminos and Wolfgang Puck's Cut. And the growing dining scene in the Town Square shopping district at the south end of the Strip has added the Yard House, Tommy Bahamas Tropical Cafe and Blue Martini.
'Jersey Boys': Also at the Palazzo, Jersey Boys has debuted. The acclaimed musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons marks the latest attempt to succeed with Broadway-style entertainment on the Strip. Seats range from $71 to $258.
Not bad: If you've ever wondered how much the big guys at the casinos make, here's a look. Steve Wynn's 2007 compensation was recently divulged as $3.2 million in salary, $7.5 million in incentives and approximately $575,000 in other compensation – about an $11.2 million package for the guy who oversaw a 19.5 percent increase in Wynn Resorts stock.
Question: What's big, green and towers over the Las Vegas Strip?
Answer: It could be the big green MGM Grand, but you're probably referring to the Palazzo, which has been named the largest "green building" in the world by the U.S. Green Building Council. The building's environmentally friendly credentials include being built from recycled structural steel and concrete, a waste-recycling program that has diverted more than 70 percent of waste from landfill, water-efficient bathroom fixtures, solar-heated pools and air-conditioning sensors that react to guests' presence (or absence) in the hotel suites.
Question: Where is the Leroy's casino?
Answer: Leroy's is a sports book chain that operates out of several casinos. What began as a small alternative operation now has dozens of locations throughout Nevada, including a shiny new master book at the Riviera in the section that used to house the Nickel Town casino.
