Movies, festival put Marfa in spotlight
12:00 AM CDT on Sunday, April 27, 2008
Marfa's first film festival begins Thursday, just two months after two movies made in the West Texas town won Academy Awards.
No Country for Old Men won four Oscars, including best picture, while There Will Be Blood won two Oscars, including best cinematography.
The first screening of the festival, which continues through May 5, is There Will Be Blood, which will be shown outdoors on the set where it was filmed.
Other highlights include Night of the Hunter (1955) starring Robert Mitchum, The Innocents (1961) with Deborah Kerr, and David Byrne's True Stories (1986). Evening movies shown outdoors will be projected on a 40-foot-wide portable screen.
Dennis Hopper is expected to attend the showing of his 1971 Western The Last Movie on May 5. He also starred in the 1956 epic Giant, which was filmed near Marfa.
