Traditional and innovative Indian tacos will be in abundance May 17 at the National Indian Taco Championship in Pawhuska, Okla.
Sponsored by the Osage Nation, whose capital is Pawhuska, the contest has added a Dessert Indian Taco competition this year. Contestants are urged to go all out and not to count calories, fat grams or carbohydrates.
Indian tacos originated with food rations the U.S. military gave to American Indians during the 1800s. The foundation component is Indian fry bread, which takes the place of a tortilla.
