Deborah Fleck: Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce staying busy this summer

12:00 AM CDT on Sunday, July 5, 2009

The Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce is keeping busy this summer. From June 29 to Friday, chamber staffers took time out from their packed schedules to head over to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport bright and early to meet the troops. Flights usually arrive around 8 a.m. in Terminal D. The chamber has supported the Welcome Home a Hero program since it started five years ago.

Up next for the chamber is a visit by Juan Sosa, president of the U.S. Panama Canal Council and former ambassador of Panama to the U.S. Sosa will talk about "The Future is Now" from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Las Colinas Country Club. The International Trade Development and Assistance Center and Irving Sisters Cities are sponsoring the program. To sign up, visit www.irvingchamber.com.

Political meetings

The Irving Democratic Club recently held a short meeting at the new south campus of North Lake College. President Sharon Barbosa ran the meeting. In addition to a few club members, attendees included Judges Carter Thompson, Theresa Tolle and Mike Snipes, and prosecutor John Carlough and Deputy Constable Charles Woertendyke. The club will not meet in July.

The Greater Irving Republican Club will also skip its July meeting. The club will meet again Aug. 4.

New officers

Many clubs and organizations recently elected new officers to serve in 2009-10. Lyric Stage League installed Diann Contestabile as president; Laura Hosler, Jane McGinnis, Connie Williamson and Paula Flately as vice presidents; Sandra Maxwell as treasurer; Keith Robinson as recording secretary; Flor Smith as corresponding secretary; and Sandy Ferney as parliamentarian. At the league's recent meeting, Contestabile received the Lillie Hinde Award for her outstanding service. League membership costs $25 or $35 per couple.

Irving Ambucs also announced it new officers. They are Jerry Loftus, president; Tom Moore, vice president; James Beynon, secretary; Perry Garman, treasurer; Bob Silver, president-elect; and Bill Looney, sergeant at arms. The organization meets at 11: 30 a.m. every Thursday.

Patriotic doings

The flags were out and lining streets across Irving for the Fourth of July. "Our town will be resplendent in red, white and blue," says Nell Anne Hunt, the founder of the Great Flag Caper. For the 16th year, Hunt has organized the patriotic tribute.
