A Houston-based health-care firm has acquired a majority stake in the embattled Renaissance Healthcare Systems, putting the Grand Prairie hospital back on target for a 2009 opening.

Atlantic Health Group is just days away from finalizing the deal, Jerome Mee, the company's CEO, said Wednesday.

The company will pay off Renaissance's current debt, pay back $6.5 million in liens to subcontractors and then start construction within the next three to four months at the Grand Prairie facility, which is 80 percent complete.

"We bought the company in distressed condition," Mr. Mee said. "It's fixable; it just doesn't happen overnight."

The Grand Prairie building has been dormant since 2000 when the facility, known then as Dallas/Fort Worth Medical Center, closed. Renaissance announced plans to renovate the building in 2006.

But in late 2007, construction came to a halt. Tarrant and Dallas county records showed that several dozen liens were filed this year against Renaissance for nonpayment.

"The simple truth of matter was this project was grossly underbudgeted," Mr. Mee said.

Mr. Mee said Atlantic will also change the name of the hospital and company within the year.

"We're moving as fast as we can," Mr. Mee said. "We're trying to be as optimistic as possible but as realistic as possible."

Renaissance operates facilities near Beaumont and in Houston, Terrell and Dallas. Atlantic Health Group is a private holding company that designs, constructs and manages hospitals around the world.
