John Cornyn's Medicare vote surprised doctors who donated to his campaign

AUSTIN – No wonder they were so upset.
Doctors gave nearly $100,000 to U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in the second quarter, then watched in fury as he voted against delaying a cut in their Medicare pay.
Mr. Cornyn's campaign finance report, filed Tuesday, shows that 106 doctors and two political action committees run by physicians contributed $94,793 to his re-election from April through June.
Three dozen doctors gave Mr. Cornyn $36,000 at a McAllen fundraiser April 25. Austin physicians held a smaller event for him June 6.
Mr. Cornyn's report shows that on June 26, the same day he surprised doctors by voting not to limit debate on the bill to avert their pay cut, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physician PAC eased $5,000 into his pocket. He later voted twice for a bill to undo the pay cut.
The Texas Medical Association's political arm withdrew its endorsement of Mr. Cornyn on June 27, which gave an opening to his Democratic opponent, Rick Noriega.
Though Mr. Noriega raised just $9,295 from 22 doctors in the quarter, he put a video on his Web site this week that assails Mr. Cornyn's Medicare vote.
The senator has said he favors a permanent fix to the almost yearly crisis Congress has over doctors' fees.
Cornyn spokesman Kevin McLaughlin said the incumbent's votes and his broad donor base reflect independence and studiousness.
The finance reports show Mr. Cornyn still has a huge money edge. As of June 30, he had nearly $9.4 million in cash, to Mr. Noriega's $916,000.
