Arlington reminding people that stadium is not in Dallas
12:00 AM CDT on Friday, June 26, 2009
Arlington leaders are getting a little testy at the lack of recognition they're getting as the home of the new Cowboys Stadium.
At the opening night George Strait concert on June 6, an announcer called it Texas Stadium, and performers throughout the evening talked about being in Dallas. The Jonas Brothers' Web site listed last Saturday's concert at Cowboys Stadium as taking place in Dallas.
Now Arlington officials are getting peeved with American Idol, which has its local auditions this week at Cowboys Stadium. The Idol Web site raves about Dallas and gives Arlington only a passing mention in the address.
Diane Brandon, an Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau vice president, encouraged city boosters to comment on the Idol Web site about the confusing mentions of Dallas.
"Someone copied large parts of the Dallas CVB website and pasted to the Idol site – and what's most disturbing, the fact that public transportation is available here," Brandon wrote. "Young people from all over could be stranded at train stations and bus stops because of this error – which goes beyond civic pride."
Arlington is the largest city in the nation without mass transit.
Although Idol auditions have packed Cowboys Stadium this week, they won't stop the opening day of public tours today.
Information about the paid tours is available on the Dallas Cowboys Web site. The standard adult tour costs $15.
Team owner Jerry Jones misspoke when he answered questions after a speech at the Petroleum Club of Fort Worth earlier this month. He said the team had sold out the stadium's reserved season ticket seats, which are in the upper deck.
That's not the case. Cowboys officials said that 3,000 reserved seats were still available. What Jones apparently meant to say was that all the seats that didn't require personal seat licenses were sold out. Those sold out quickly last year.
The new stadium retains the famed hole in the roof from Texas Stadium, but there are other features that are carrying over , too. The Cowboys transferred 12 large live oak trees from the Texas Stadium property to the new site in Arlington on Thursday.
The trees weigh about 30,000 to 53,000 pounds each and underwent a monthlong "curing" process to prepare them for the move.
