Three charged with murder in Denton County taxi driver death

11:56 PM CDT on Saturday, July 4, 2009

Three people were arrested and charged with capital murder Saturday in the death of a taxi driver whose burned body was found by firefighters putting out a grass fire in rural Denton County.

Noah Robert Whitehead, 23, William Kirk Stephens, 22, and Mariesha Lynne Ohlfs, 32, were being held in the Denton County Jail on Saturday. Bail for each was set at $250,000.

The victim, a driver for Freedom Cab Co., was found about 9 p.m. Thursday by Justin firefighters extinguishing a grass fire five miles west of Texas Motor Speedway.

The man, whose shirtless body was partially burned, was stabbed in the chest and his throat had been cut, Denton County sheriff’s officials said. His name was not released, pending notification of next of kin.

Denton County Sheriff’s spokesman Tom Reedy on Saturday said an image from a nearby convenience store’s surveillance camera and tracking dogs led them to identify Stephens as a suspect. Reedy also said two other taxi cab robberies had occurred in that area recently.

After following a phone tip, authorities found Stephens at a Haltom City residence. Reedy said Stephens voluntarily told them he was with Whitehead when the driver was struck on the head with a glass bottle, stabbed and burned.

The driver’s cash, credit cards and other items were stolen. Reedy said Whitehead called Ohlfs and told her to meet them and bring gasoline and a shovel. Stephens and Whitehead then allegedly drove the taxi to a location about a mile south.

Whitehead and Ohlfs were arrested at a home in Argyle, where Reedy said authorities found personal property taken from the taxi driver.

Sheriff’s investigators found the victim’s blue van in tall brush about a mile away from his body and discovered a large amount of blood in the front and rear seats. No money was found on the driver or in the cab, and investigators believe he was robbed and then killed.

According to taxi company records, sheriff’s officials said, the men were picked up near the Greyhound bus station in downtown Dallas and asked to be taken to Wichita Falls.

Sheriff’s officials said the taxi company told them the driver last called in about 7:45 p.m. Thursday. Also, the man’s daughter had been unable to reach him on his cellphone.
