08/27/07: Schools wrestling with policies under new religious liberties act
The Schoolchildren's Religious Liberties Act was meant to clarify how Texas schoolchildren can publicly convey their religious stances on campus and at school events. Instead, it has created statewide confusion over how districts should comply with the law and added a new layer of divisiveness to an issue already well known for passionate discord – religion in schools.

08/21/07: Playing it safe: Kids and sports injuries
While sports promote the exercise that is so healthy for the body, injuries are becoming a growing concern as kids pour increasing hours and dedication into pursuing excellence. About 20 million youths in the U.S. participate in organized sports, sustaining about 3 million injuries annually. And up to 90,000 of these injuries require hospitalization, according to Care of the Young Athlete, from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics. And those numbers may be low; the newest edition was printed in 2000.

08/20/07: DISD parents, staff get say in principal hirings
With a week to go before school begins, Dallas ISD officials are working to fill 13 principal positions. The number is about the same as in previous Augusts. What's different is that this year, the district is using a new approach that gives parents, teachers and students more say in selecting their principal. Applicants interview with a committee of at least a dozen people, including district staffers, a counselor, parents, and, at high schools, a student.
