LBJ's legacy in the spotlight
12:00 AM CDT on Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Historians, relatives and members of Lyndon B. Johnson's administration gathered in Washington, D.C., this week to celebrate the centennial of the former president's birth and discuss his legacy. While the Texan's presidency was defined by the Vietnam War and civil rights breakthroughs, many scholars and former Johnson aides lamented Tuesday that his other domestic achievements – Medicare, Medicaid and environmental measures – have been forgotten by history. The celebration will continue today with the observance of LBJ Day in Congress. Historians, relatives and members of Lyndon B.
