Denton County elections: Lewisville council veterans win easily amid light turnout

One of Lewisville's most contentious City Council races in recent history failed to draw much attention from voters, with two incumbents winning easily under weak turnout.

Incumbents Greg Tierney in Place 1 and Lathan Watts in Place 3 won as only 1,398 voters in the city of 91,550 cast ballots in Saturday's election.

Mr. Tierney's challenger, John Gorena – a veteran of anti-illegal-immigration rallies in Farmers Branch and Irving – campaigned vociferously for Lewisville to take a stronger stand against illegal immigration. His platform included a plan for police officers to confront day laborers and arrest those without proper identification. Mr. Tierney called the idea "absolutely ludicrous."

Both candidates said Lewisville voters are increasingly frustrated with illegal immigration, but Mr. Tierney – along with other city leaders – puts the blame on the state and federal governments.

"I don't want to say voters necessarily made a statement about illegal immigration," said Mr. Tierney, a restaurant owner. "Voters are smart enough to know operating a city takes more than one issue."

Mr. Watts – a political manager for a trade association – defeated structural engineer David Fogle.

In other races:

Highland Village

Incumbent Mayor Dianne Costa easily won a second term against longtime political rival and former City Council member Fred Busche. Gene Costa, an 18-year-old high school student, finished a distant third.

Flower Mound

Incumbent Place 2 Town Council member Al Filidoro, a lawyer, defeated planning and zoning commissioner Steve Dixon, an insurance agent. For the open Place 4 seat, planning and zoning commissioner Jean Levenick edged out political newcomer and insurance agent Virginia Jellison.

Denton

In a four-man mayoral race, Mayor Perry McNeill finished second and faces a runoff against attorney Mark Burroughs. Justin Bell and Darac Favre finished a distant third and fourth.
