John Wiley Price, Ryan Brown to spend time at Lew Sterrett jail

10:47 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 1, 2009

Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price and budget director Ryan Brown plan to spend two entire shifts inside the Lew Sterrett jail.

That's 16 hours. But they won't be wearing orange jumpsuits.

The Sheriff's Department has asked for more staffing in the new south tower jail. Price and Brown want to see firsthand if it's needed.

Price, a Democrat first elected in 1984, is no stranger there. As a protester years ago, he did some time behind bars.

Most recently, he's spearheaded massive jail improvements, sometimes making unannounced inspections.

And Brown, in charge of slashing department budgets, isn't the most popular person during this recession – especially within the Sheriff's Department.
