Exhibit captures Fry Street from 1989 to present
Photographer Tricia Kay said the controversial demolition of a single block of Fry Street served as a cornerstone to Denton and its people.
“Deconstructed Fry: The Last Supper Photo Show” at Jupiter House will feature Kay’s photos of the Fry Street community from 1989 to the present. June marks the anniversary of the Fry Street fire, and Kay said she wants the community to remember the history and relive the memories.
Fry Street became an emblem of Denton’s history last year when a Houston developer bought a block of the street near the University of North Texas, then demolished historical buildings to make way for new businesses. The sale and demolition touched off a protest and a grass-roots plan to preserve central Denton.
“The photos share an insight into people’s lives, from the store owners to the students and the community,” Kay said.
UNT’s nonfiction conference set for later this month
The value of silence, how creative work can often come out in a time of chaos, and the transformation of a business story into literary art are some of the topics that will be presented at the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference this month.
The University of North Texas-sponsored conference serves aspiring writers, authors and journalists.
“Anyone who wants to expand their horizon in the world of writing can find it here,” said George Getschow, conference writer-in-residence and a UNT professor.
Headlining the conference on July 19 will be N. Scott Momaday, the pioneer of modern American Indian literature and winner of the National Medal of the Arts in 2007.
Momaday will be joined by keynote speakers Bob Shachochis, National Book Award winner for Easy in the Islands, on July 18, and Candice Millard, a former staff writer for National Geographic and author of River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey on July 20. Also presenting will be Ali Wolfe, daughter of Tom Wolfe and literary journalist for Conde Nast Portfolio magazine.
