Richard Durrett's roster analysis: Catchers

01:40 AM CDT on Sunday, March 30, 2008

It's the deepest position in the organization. Several catchers could see playing time, led by Gerald Laird.

Gerald Laird

Age: 28
Exp.: 3 years, 77 days
B-T: R-R

The lowdown: He was the fulltime starter last season and struggled at the plate. He batted .224 with nine homers and 47 RBIs in 120 games. ... Has thrown out 40.2 percent of baserunners in the last five seasons, the second-best mark in the majors in that time. ... He has hit .307 against lefties in his career.

Job: Starting catcher

Growth goal: Prove he can hit consistently and handle the pitching staff.

Adam Melhuse

Age: 36
Exp.: 5 years, 123 days
B-T: S-R

The lowdown: Traded to the Rangers at midseason and was invited to spring training as a nonroster invitee. ... He spent most of the last five seasons as a backup in Oakland, so he's familiar with manager Ron Washington. ... He had just 68 at-bats in Texas in 2007 and batted .206 with one homer and seven RBIs.

Job: Backup catcher

Growth goal: Give Laird a break, especially in the hot Arlington summer.
