West

Arizona: D-backs remain contenders thanks to acquisition of RHP Dan Haren to pair with RHP Brandon Webb. But lineup lacked pop last year (14th in runs), and it wasn't upgraded.

Colorado: Deep, young pitching staff. Deeper lineup. And now playoff-tested. The new model for any team hoping to build from within. (Hello, Rangers.)

Los Angeles Dodgers: If new CF Andruw Jones rebounds from .222 season, Dodgers could hang with the front-runners. If not, they will fade even faster than last year (33-40 in second half).

San Diego: Team that fell just short of playoffs added injury-prone RHP Mark Prior, LHP Randy Wolf and OF Jim Edmonds. That will only make medical insurance premiums rise.

San Francisco: Barry Bonds' homer chase was distraction from how bad Giants were the last two years. With Bonds exiled, it will be painfully evident club is in disrepair.

Central

Chicago Cubs: Adding OF Kosuke Fukudome takes lineup from middle of pack to upper third. If Cubs stay healthy, they could run away with baseball's weakest division.

Milwaukee: Additions of playoff-tested veterans CF Mike Cameron, C Jason Kendall and RHP Eric Gagne give Brewers more toughness. More importantly: Does trio have anything left?

Cincinnati: To improve pitching staff, Reds employed most unorthodox approach: They pursued former Rangers. RHP Francisco Cordero is the closer, and RHP Edinson Volquez could be in rotation.

Houston: Trade for SS Miguel Tejada a day before Mitchell Report dedicated chapter to him was ill-advised. Even worse things are on horizon since farm system is depleted of talent.

St. Louis: Rotation is so thin, Rick Ankiel might be one of the top five pitchers on the staff. And he's now an outfielder. First 90-loss season since 1990 is possible.

Pittsburgh: A 16th consecutive losing season is a sure thing. On bright side, there are lots of cool names like RHP Romulo Sanchez, RHP Franquelis Osoria and OF Xavier Nady.

East

New York Mets: Arrival of LHP Johan Santana puts Mets over the top. Santana and healthy RHP Pedro Martinez ensure no repeat of Great 2007 Collapse.

Atlanta: Can LHP Tom Glavine (age 42) and RHP John Smoltz (41 in May) still deliver? Probably. Can Braves keep 1B Mark Teixeira happy? Uh, probably not.

Philadelphia: No guarantees about playoffs from SS Jimmy Rollins since Mets landed Santana. Won't hear one either if Phils must rely on RHP Adam Eaton (6.29 ERA in 2007) in rotation.

Washington: At least there is a new stadium to keep fans interested.

Florida: At least there is a new stadium on the drawing board.
