Friday's Texas Rangers spring training report
12:03 AM CST on Saturday, March 1, 2008
RHP Warner Madrigal, signed as a free agent after Los Angeles mistakenly left him off its 40-man roster, allowed all three of the Angels' runs in the seventh Friday at Surprise Stadium. Angels DH Brandon Wood's two-run homer gave the Angels the lead.
Hits: SS Michael Young took an awkward throw from LHP Matt Harrison while on the move and still was able to turn a double play to end the first. ... SS Ramon Vazquez charged in to field a ball that glanced off LHP Bill White's glove and was still able to throw Robb Quinlan out at first.
Misses: All four Rangers baserunners who have attempted to steal against Los Angeles in the last two games were thrown out – and none of the plays was close. ... CF Jason Ellison missed a hit-and-run sign, leading to one of the caught stealings, and got a bad jump on another. ... Rangers are 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position in last two games. ... White lacked command. He faced six hitters; he walked two and hit one. ... SS Ryan Roberts, from Fort Worth, couldn't handle an accurate throw from C Taylor Teagarden on a stolen base in the eighth. ...
Up next: The Rangers play the second of their five-game spring series against Kansas City today at 2:05 CST (KRLD-1080 AM). The Rangers, who need two more wins over the Royals to become Surprise Recreation Campus intramural champs, will send RHP Vicente Padilla to the mound for his first start of the spring. The Royals are technically the home team today.
An occasional glimpse into the evolving role of new Rangers president Nolan Ryan:
At least one Surprise-area restaurant is quite happy with Ryan's decision to return to the Rangers. The Native New Yorker, a chicken wings and sandwiches eatery, proudly proclaims that it serves Nolan Ryan beef for both its hamburgers and its sliders. No word on whether Ryan paid a visit to the restaurant Friday night.
Players don't do rental cars very well. Many of them drive their cars to spring and have them shipped back at the end. Marlon Byrd is one who won't go the rental route, so if you see him tooling around town, it will be in his own stylish ride.
What are you driving these days?
I've got a Maserati Quattroporte Executive GT.
Sounds expensive. How much?
It lists for $105,000, but I got a deal on it.
Ah, you got the insider's deal. The Maserati seems to be the new car of choice for your established big leaguer. How'd that happen?
Is it? I thought it was an old-money kind of car. You see a lot of older people driving them. I got it for my birthday last year. I do know Michael Young got one also this winter, but I don't think a lot others guys drive them.
What did you step up from?
I had a BMW 750.
Are you a big car guy?
I'm really not. Never have been. My wife knew I liked this car, though, and surprised me with it for my birthday.
Let's go back in the day. What was your first auto?
I had a Subaru hatchback. It was cinnamon. It was very ugly. In college, I had to park it on a hill, so I could pop the clutch while it rolled downhill. I got it from my dad. It had over 100,000 miles on it when I got through with it. It just literally would not start anymore.
Got your eye on another car?
Nope. I'm done. This is it. There is nothing else I want. My wife has an Escalade for the two kids and room for all her stuff. I'm set.
Tell us about rich people. What kind of special features does your Maserati come with?
Well, there's a “sports” button. Say, you are going like 140 mph and you hit the sports button and it feels like you are just cruising along at 70 or 80 mph. It's smooth.
Do you have personal knowledge of this magic button's ability?
Um, yes.
Where?
Well, you know, I-30 is kind of a straight shot, put it that way. I got nervous; don't worry, I won't be doing it again.
Reciprocity (Foul): Angels lineup was notably void of starting players after Rangers sent their full starting group all the way across the valley a day earlier.
Crowded house (Foul): Or should we say, uncrowded house? The teams have averaged only 3,902 fans for two consecutive games. So much for an AL West showdown.
Astro World (fair): Two members of Houston's first division-winning rotation – Nolan Ryan and Angels assistant GM Ken Forsch – were on hand Friday. No sighting of Joaquin Andujar, however.
