Sunday's Texas Rangers spring training report
Rangers 8, Royals 709:11 PM CST on Sunday, March 2, 2008
The Rangers clinched the City of Surprise championship by beating Kansas City for the third consecutive time this spring. And Sunday, they did it in dramatic fashion. Fort Worth's Ryan Roberts hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score. German Duran, also of Fort Worth, then doubled and scored on Ramon Vazquez's single to left.
Hits: 2B Ian Kinsler laid down a bunt for a hit when he saw Kansas City 3B Jason Smith playing back. ... Kinsler was hit by a pitch to start the first and also had a pair of hits. He has reached base eight times in 11 spring plate appearances. ... DH Josh Hamilton was 3-for-3 after taking two days off and is 6-for-9 this spring.
Misses: RHP Luis Mendoza, the first Rangers pitcher to come back from a multi-inning outing with as few as three days of rest, struggled in his second inning. He walked Mark Teahen and Mitch Maier in succession and did not finish the inning. ... LF Jason Botts looked foolish trying to catch a line drive into the 20 mph cross-field wind. The ball kicked off his glove for an error.
Up next: When the Rangers play San Francisco at 2:05 today, Rangers radio broadcaster Victor Rojas will call the action on the team's first Webcast, available at texasrangers.com. LHP A.J. Murray will face the Giants. LHP Noah Lowry is scheduled to pitch for San Francisco. Good bet there will be some reference on the Webcast to deposed home run king and ex-Giant Barry Bonds.
The hitless (Foul): Michael Young singled home a run with his first hit of the spring in his 10th at-bat. It leaves 1B Ben Broussard (0-for-7) as the only regular without a hit.
Everyday man (Fair): LHP Eddie Guardado made his Rangers debut and retired both lefties he faced, Mark Teahen and Mitch Maier, without throwing anything over 85 mph.
Winds of change (Foul): Get ready for some brutal winds, North Texas. The 20-30 mph gusts that blew through Surprise on Sunday are headed for Dallas today.
Playing in Mexico this winter, Jason Botts had a lot of time to catch up on some of his favorite TV shows, because he brought a bundle of them with him on DVD. We sat down to talk TV and what he gleaned from Mexican television.
What are you watching these days?
My two favorite TV shows on the air today, in no order, are Lost, House and 24.
Jason, that's three.
I did say two, yes, but I forgot about 24, because it hasn't been on the air for a while. Maybe that had to do with the writers strike, but there hasn't been a new season, so I forgot about it for a minute.
And, House? I mean, isn't it the same show every time? Guy or girl collapses, they run a bunch of tests that all prove they are wrong, Dr. House insults somebody, there is a graphic of a neuron exploding, and then House solves the issue by watching TV?
Isn't that beautiful? No, it's not exactly how it works. You haven't watched the show from the start all the way through. Dr. House has evolved over the years. He's gotten some heart. He's been wrong on occasion. It's not always the same. You could say the same thing about 24, because Jack Bauer always saves the day. If they would just listen to Jack in the first place, they could change the name of the show to 12 , because he'd get it done in half the time.
Did you like anything about Mexican TV?
I liked that cable there is not censored. There are some shows here that would be better if they were on, but I didn't watch much TV there. I brought DVDs and found a couple of new shows I like: Prison Break and Boston Legal.
What's the most embarrassing show you'll admit to liking?
Well, I don't consider Friends embarrassing, but others might not admit they like it. Still, I hear it quoted all the time. It's my all-time favorite show. The other day, I caught Marlon Byrd quoting it, because he said he was going to show somebody his "Red Ross." I quote the show every day.
And why would say some it's embarrassing?
I think men always go for the action hero or guy comedy. Friends has more emotion, more sensitivity; there's more positive stuff in it.
Which character do you most identify with?
I think Chandler.
Hmmm. I had you pegged for Phoebe. You are kind of the wacky one who can be deceptively perceptive.
Maybe you are right. My sister and I named our Lab puppy Phoebe. She probably is my favorite character. The things she says, others just don't quite get the brilliance of them. Maybe I do relate best to her.
