Monday's Texas Rangers spring training report
03:34 AM CST on Tuesday, March 4, 2008
The Rangers won in their final at-bat for the second straight day Monday. The two teams combined for 19 walks; San Francisco's starter, LHP Noah Lowry, issued nine in one inning plus two batters.
Hits: 2B Ian Kinsler led off the game with a walk. ... RHP Jamey Wright walked the first hitter he faced and allowed a single to the second but then retired the next five batters. The stretch included a double-play grounder. ... 3B Travis Metcalf had a two-run double in the eighth, then pushed a bunt past the pitcher for a base hit in the 10th.
Misses: Strike-challenged RHP Robinson Tejeda followed up a clean fourth inning of relief work by relinquishing the lead in the fifth. Rich Aurilia's two-out, bases-loaded double drove home two to tie the score at four. ... 1B Ben Broussard bounced into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the second. ... An eighth-inning grounder skipped through the legs of 1B Chris Davis.
Up next: The Rangers host Arizona at 2:05 Tuesday at Surprise Stadium. LHP Kason Gabbard, who allowed a run in two innings in his first start of the spring, will start for the Rangers. RHP Brandon Webb will start for Arizona.
Youth movement (Fair): The Rangers have won back-to-back games late with their youngest players. That's never a bad thing for a team in the building process.
Wild things (Foul): It was hard on everybody in the stadium to watch San Francisco's Noah Lowry issue nine walks in one inning plus two batters.
Halls of fame (On the line): Dale Hellestrae was a great deep snapper, but does deep snapping a Hall of Famer make? He's in Scottsdale's Sports HOF at Scottsdale Stadium.
Fort Worth's German Duran spent last year touring the Texas League, which now includes teams spread from Springfield, Mo., to Midland. Duran, who may one day be seeing the sites in Seattle, New York and Boston, related stories of life on the minor league road.
What has been the best minor league road city you have visited?
Probably Springfield. Or Corpus Christi. Both have great baseball facilities and the fans are great. In Springfield, even if the visiting team makes a great play, the fans will clap. They are very into the game and very appreciative.
And what else do you like about those cities?
Everything is close together. You can walk to the stadium from the hotel. In Corpus, the views of the water, especially from the stadium, are very nice.
Growing up a Texan, is it weird to play in a place called Whataburger Field?
A little bit, but the Whataburger in the stadium at Corpus is really cool. It's kind of on two levels. It's got a view. How many Whataburgers have a view?
So, you've hung out there? Chill after a game with an A1 Thick-n-Hearty Burger?
I've been there, but I usually go for taquitos. That late at night, you don't want to eat too heavy. The other thing I loved were the honey butter chicken biscuits.
Speaking of eating on the road, what is minor league meal money these days?
$20
Still? I can't imagine that goes very far.
No, it doesn't. It's just one meal. You pretty much better expect to bring some extra cash. And in Bakersfield in the California League, $20 is not even $20, because everything in California is more expensive.
What about the clubhouse spread?
In most places, it's just peanut butter and jelly or turkey. And you don't want to eat the turkey unless you are looking for a stomachache.
OK, rookie, time to be put on the spot. You told us about your favorite road cities. What is your least favorite?
It's got to be Modesto (California). It's just so hot there. Plus, the clubhouse is tiny. I mean it's so small that when you are changing you are basically in your next-door-neighbor's locker. It's just hard to move around.
