Tuesday's Texas Rangers spring training report
10:06 PM CST on Tuesday, March 4, 2008
Hits: Jason Botts played first base for a few innings and had a triple, never stopping on his way to third. ...Nelson Cruz had a single and drove in a run. ...Gerald Laird had a good defensive game, throwing out a runner at second and blocking several balls in the dirt. ...Ian Kinsler made a nice leaping grab for an out in the first.
Misses: Kameron Loe admitted he was too pumped up and should haven't tried to field a chopper hit between the mound and third. He threw it away to first base for an error. ...With Botts at third with one out in the seventh, Nelson Cruz struck out and Chris Stewart grounded out. ...Frank Catalanotto was 0-for-2 and is batting .182 this spring.
Up next: The Rangers host Milwaukee at 2:05 today at Surprise Stadium. Two left-handers will oppose each other: Matt Harrison for the Rangers and Manny Parra for the Brewers.
Contact (Fair): Arizona had plenty of that against LHP Kason Gabbard, who had movement on his pitches, but left too many up. He gave up four earned runs.
Efficiency (On the line): RHP Eric Hurley didn't waste many pitches, going three scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Hit parade (Foul): OF Josh Hamilton is having a good start to the spring, with hits in all four games he's played. He's batting .636 (7-for-11).
Kameron Loe is a big movie buff and passes the time in the bullpen talking movies with the other pitchers. He shared some of his knowledge of the big screen with us.
Give us a few of your favorite movie lines.
I think my most requested is probably Old School and the dart in the neck. 'You're ...You're crazy man. You're crazy. I like you, but you're crazy (mimics Will Farrell, talking deep and slowly, when he's told he has a tranquilizer dart in his neck).' I'm also asked to do Arnold Schwarzenegger. 'Get out of here. What are you waiting for? Get down.' (He really does sound like Schwarzenegger). I think that was said in any of his movies.
You do the impersonations, too. Do you work on those in the shower or in front of a mirror?
No. When I was little, my dad used to read me books and do all the voices. It's something I picked up. I found a decent range and found my voice pretty well.
If a movie was made about you, who would play you?
I think John Malkovich. I love the characters he's played in the movies. They're always a little obscure. I think he's a brilliant guy. He's versatile with the characters he's played, and he's got a bald head. He'd have to smile a lot to play me, though.
What are some of your favorite movies?
The one I've watched the most is Dumb & Dumber. I've watched it 300 times. (Loe said he can recite all the lines. We didn't ask him to).
Is it still funny the 300th time?
It's still funny to me. I love Jim Carrey. Jeff Daniels is awesome. Their chemistry together in that movie is great, and I thought the writing was brilliant. It's that goofy, slapstick humor that I like.
Would you like to direct or act?
I'd like to act. I feel fairly comfortable in front of a camera. I'm not shy and I'm not afraid to make a fool of myself. I'd like my best friend, Ryan Young, to direct. He's worked on some big movies, but he's not a director yet. He will be, though.
An occasional glimpse into the evolving role of new Rangers president Nolan Ryan:
Ryan gave Brandon McCarthy some pointers on the curve ball during McCarthy's bullpen session Tuesday. "Nolan Ryan trying to teach you how to throw a curve ball is like Tiger Woods going up to you on the range and trying to show you how to hit your wedge shot," said McCarthy, who thought it was a "cool experience."
