Rangers catcher and Carrollton Creekview and University of Texas product Taylor Teagarden played a lot of video games during his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery in November 2005. He talked about his gaming prowess and his favorite video game, Madden Football.
How long have you been playing video games?
Since I was about 8 years old and the first PlayStation 2 came out. I was one of the first guys to jump on them. I was about 15, way back in 2000 or 1999. I'd go to a buddy's house and we'd play Madden Football every day after school for a few hours. The first day it comes out, in August, we're one of the first to get it. I don't care how old I am, I'll get a Madden Football and a new game system that comes with it.
Are you always the same team in Madden?
I have a franchise. You can pick a franchise and you do a fantasy draft. You can draft some of the best players, and you build over years down the road. Right now my franchise is in 2010, and players do progress. They have good and bad years.
Who is one of your favorite players in the game?
Adrian Peterson. I got him while he's young. He's real fast and he's a stud. He's in this third year in the league in my franchise.
A former Longhorns baseball player loves former Sooner Adrian Peterson?
It's different, because Adrian is from Texas. I still have a lot of pride for the players that are from Texas, even though they went to OU. One of my good buddies, Travis Wilson, played football at OU, so I kind of had to soften up to them.
How good are you at Madden Football?
I'm really good. I see these things on ESPN, where they have these competitions and challenges for Madden, and I've always thought that it would be cool to enter one of those things one day and just see what I've got. I haven't seen a lot of guys that can beat me, seriously. I tell people, 'Don't get frustrated if I get up 21-0 in the first quarter. I play this game a lot.'
Have you had some teammates challenge you?
Ben Harrison challenged me last year and I embarrassed him pretty good. When I was rehabbing in 2006, I played a lot of video games. I think I lost three times the whole year. It's fun. There's a lot of trash talking involved, of course.
Is that an important part of the game?
Definitely. You have to trash talk. I'll get the weaker teams, and other guys will get the Patriots or Colts, and I'll find a way to beat them. It aggravates them.
An occasional look at the Rangers' top priority: improving the pitching staff
Several Rangers relievers got a chance to pitch in Saturday's game. Kazuo Fukumori pitched his fourth scoreless inning of the spring, giving up one hit with two strikeouts. Frank Francisco pitched two scoreless innings and didn't allow a hit. Kameron Loe and Eddie Guardado weren't as successful. Loe gave up two hits, including a two-run homer, and Guardado allowed two runs on three hits with a walk.
