Storm throws Texas Rangers' rotation into disarray
12:15 AM CDT on Thursday, April 10, 2008
ARLINGTON – Just when it looked like all the pieces of the Texas Rangers staff were about to fall nicely into place, along comes a storm and washes it all out again.
The threat of heavy rains, hail and wind forced the club to postpone Wednesday's game against Baltimore. That, in turn, forced the club to schedule a doubleheader for today beginning at 4:05 p.m. And it means the Rangers may have to scramble to find a starter for Monday's game against Los Angeles and potentially some long relief help for later in the week.
The rainout moves Wednesday's scheduled starter, Kason Gabbard, to the second game of the doubleheader. Kevin Millwood, originally scheduled to pitch today, will start the first game.
The Rangers need a fifth starter Saturday and will activate Luis Mendoza. Unless Gabbard or Millwood has a short outing today – and the Rangers hope neither does – they probably can't come back on three days' rest to start Monday. Manager Ron Washington said the club would probably turn to Jamey Wright or Josh Rupe to start that game. But with the club needing to create space for Mendoza on the roster, Rupe may be demoted.
With no off days scheduled until April 28, it sets up the possibility of the club having to juggle to have a long man available nightly.
Baltimore will stay in order, pitching Steve Trachsel and then lefty Adam Loewen.
Tickets for Wednesday's game may be exchanged for any home game remaining on the schedule. Tickets for today's game are good for both games of the doubleheader. In addition, the Rangers have moved the dollar hot dog promotion scheduled for Wednesday to today.
Oklahoma-bound: The Rangers did not lose either of the players they were forced to expose to waivers at the end of spring training. Right-hander Robinson Tejeda cleared Wednesday and was outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma. He joins outfielder Nelson Cruz, who cleared Monday. Tejeda, who pitched himself off the major league roster with a rocky spring, will continue to transition from the starting rotation to the bullpen.
Numbers game: Washington said he will wear No. 42 on Tuesday against Los Angeles in honor of Jackie Robinson Day. If Washington has his way, it will be the only number a Ranger wears that day.
Since Major League Baseball has given permission for anybody in uniform to wear the number, Washington has asked that the entire team wear it. General manager Jon Daniels indicated it's likely Washington's wish will be granted.
Last year, after a couple of players asked MLB for permission to wear the retired number, a slew of African-American players followed suit. All African-Americans on the Rangers roster and coaching staff wore it.
"I don't think you can be a baseball fan and not appreciate what Jackie Robinson did for the game and for our country," said shortstop Michael Young. "I think last year a lot of players didn't want to wear the number because they didn't want to take the significance away. But if [Washington] wants us to do it, we'll do it, and we'd take a great deal of pride in doing it."
Briefly: Washington said 1B Jason Botts would make his 2008 debut against LHP Adam Loewen. The Rangers are 0-2 against left-handed starters this season and are 11-for-44 (.250) in those games. ... OF Julio Borbon, the 35th overall pick in last year's draft, had a scare at Class A Bakersfield on Tuesday. He jammed his right heel and ankle against the wall in the ninth inning trying to make a catch and had to be removed. Borbon, however, reportedly had no difficulties walking after the game. He is expected to be back in the lineup by the end of the weekend. Borbon suffered a broken left ankle while at the University of Tennessee. ... LHP Kasey Kiker, the Rangers' top pick in the 2006 draft, has not yet joined Bakersfield's rotation. Kiker battled off-season shoulder soreness, and the Rangers decided to slow his preparation. He remains at extended spring training but should join Bakersfield this month.
