AAC official optimistic at bringing final here sometime between 2012 and '16

While the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium in Arlington has targeted a men's NCAA Final Four, the women could have a championship date in Dallas.

The American Airlines Center, the Big 12 and the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau are working on a joint bid to host a women's Final Four between 2012 and 2016.

Dave Brown, the vice president and general manager of the AAC, was optimistic.

"We think we have put a great package together," Brown said. "We couldn't have two greater partners in the city of Dallas and the Big 12. I would be very surprised if we didn't win one of the award years."

A small Dallas delegation plans to attend the women's Final Four this weekend in Tampa, Fla., Brown said.

Bids are due June 2 with finalists named by Aug. 10. After site visits during the fall and in-person presentations, the Division I women's basketball committee will make its recommendations by November.

Thirteen cities have expressed an interest in bidding for the five dates, according to Sue Donohoe, the NCAA vice president for Division I women's basketball.

The women's Final Four represents big business. Studies have estimated an economic impact of more than $20 million at recent sites, with 20,000 hotel rooms occupied.

The women's Final Four also serves as the site for Women's Basketball Coaches Association convention, providing an extra event to the host city.

"It's a real plus to showcase the city to a national media audience," said Phillip Jones, the president of the DCVB.

This year's Final Four in Tampa has been sold out since last summer, which might remove any concern about Dallas attendance.

About 3,000 tickets were sold in advance of last year's regional at Reunion Arena. Brown said the city was a "victim of the draw" that saw no Big 12 team reach Dallas.

Dallas has several advantages, including a state-of-the-art facility in the AAC and a track record of having successfully hosted recent major events, including the NBA Finals, NHL All-Star Game and Big 12 tournament, which could serve as a model.

Donohoe, who has attended events at the AAC, called Dallas "a city that has a great deal to offer the NCAA, WBCA and women's basketball community as it considers future sites for the women's Final Four. The arena is a first-rate arena, with a very talented and experienced staff.

Future host sites for the women's NCAA Final Four:

Year City Arena
2008 Tampa St. Pete Times Forum
2009 St. Louis Edward Jones Dome
2010 San Antonio Alamodome
2011 Indianapolis Lucas Oil Stadium
