North Texas football hit hard by APR release
06:10 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 7, 2008
North Texas will lose five scholarships in football and one in men's basketball after the NCAA released its annual report on Academic Progress Rates for its member institutions Tuesday.
The APR is a four-year look at graduation rates culminating with the 2006-07 academic year. North Texas wasn't the only area school to be reprimanded for failing to meet minimum requirements in certain sports.
UT-Arlington lost 1.17 scholarships in baseball and two in women's basketball.
The only Big 12 schools to lose scholarships were Oklahoma State (one in women's basketball), Kansas (two in football) and Kansas State (one in men's basketball).
Colorado received a public warning to improve its graduation rate in men's basketball but did not lose any scholarships.
North Texas was among the hardest hit in football nationally. Of the 37 schools penalized in football, the schools to lose more scholarships than North Texas were Alabama-Birmingham (9), San Jose State (9), Washington State (8), Idaho (8), Southern (6.3), Toledo (6), San Diego State (6) and Weber State (5.86).
"We recognize and appreciate the intent of the APR and will continue to work hard toward not only meeting, but exceeding, the standards set by the NCAA," UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal said. "We do, however, work under the belief that it is one of many components in measuring academic success.
"In our athletics program, we are continually implementing support programs and enhancing facilities that further the ability of our student-athletes to be academically successful and to graduate. Our focus is to promote an environment where our students achieve their academic goals. That is demonstrated by the graduation rate of our student-athletes, which improved from 37 to 67 percent from 2001 to 2006."
The APR is a tool the NCAA developed for every Division I sports team. It is calculated based upon individual athlete academic progress but is reported as a composite team measurement. If a team's APR falls below the 925 benchmark, the team could be sanctioned.
The scores are calculated by giving teams one point for each athlete who stays in school and another for each athlete who remains academically eligible. The point totals are then divided by the team's maximum points possible to derive a score equivalent to a percentage.
The average APR for all Division I athletes is 961, according to the latest data. The average APR for male athletes is 951, while the average for female athletes is 969.
Texas and Oklahoma posted the highest APR in football in the Big 12 with scores of 942.
Nationally, men's teams with the highest APRs are fencing (977), followed by water polo (975) and gymnastics (973). Baseball (938), football (934) and basketball (928) posted the lowest average APRs.
Women's teams with the highest APRs are crew (or rowing, 985), lacrosse (984) and field hockey (983). Women's bowling posted the lowest APR at 941.
